What was the estimate for the paint job? I'm doing one on my 92 300D next summer. It's been awhile since I've had a car painted (maybe since 1998 or so). That's a rare color by the way. I've never seen that on many 87 300D's I worked on. They were usually Champagne/Burgundy.

Lol... Rare yes, but that's definitely not a factory color you are seeing, I bought it from a person of European nationality that told me he painted it himself a couple years ago. It was in need of a turbo oil seal. Orig it was the light silver blue color with a blue MB tex int. About a year or so ago right before the transmission needed replaced (Lol), my friend was scrapping a 124 with a nice black tex interior so we gutted both cars and put the black in mine. On the subject of paint and body My buddy is doing all the work including buying the good paint and clear for $1700

99% finished

Should be getting it back tomorrow, They are trying to figure out the door locks, I wasnt much help when they asked? Now when you turn the key in the lock there is no resistance and nothing happens.

they are on the way, found a set of real Bosch Euro lights on Ebay for $195 shipped, and they even came with Euro corner lamps, and I also picked up the Euro style wiper arms, I already have the wiper motors which I had to swap in 94 95 wiper transmission links into,to make them swipe all the way across the light. because the North American ones only have about two thirds of the reach. and you also have to swap the motors from side to side since the rotation is opposite from Euro to N/A, once I get them and I will be going back down to the body shop for them to drill the holes needed for fitment

Valence panels with holes from a 94-95 124 don't cost that much new and come ready to paint. Used ones should cost next to nothing. Does your shop have a way to cut clean square holes for the squirters?

depends on how good a paint job you want. I just painted my 87 a couple weeks ago. 700 bucks. But prices was higher due to also shooting the door jams and under the lids cause I did a slight color change, (dark grey to black) They also had to fix a couple dents and reshape a quarter panel.

The paint job will be as good as your prep at these types of places. I prestrip the entire car and take it to them basically ready to tape and paint. Then I put it all back together myself. That step cost most than the actual painting does.

Keeping same color, the price would have been about 400.

Results...

Before

After

Another...

2 paint jobs later... (PO had it painted and was in a wreak right after then I did it again...)

In my adding the 94 body panels I found a few issues other than the square holes. (which you don't have to change) First. on the square holes, the current round ones will work just fine, I used a little tap for a hammer and the (grommets?) went right in. Of course, they will spin when you try to put the screws in later, but nothing you can't stop using a long flat screw driver while your tightening down the molding trim screws.

The front fenders of the 94 and the 87 are a little different. the 94's lip is not as deep so the moldings tab can go around it to hold it secure... Fit, cut the molding and find another way to make it hold down or cut the fender. (think a little layer of Butyl tape to secure that area... crap holds down your windshield, we use it at work to secure screen protector over LCD monitors and you have to use a pry bar to remove them later...They make the stuff as a roll or as a paste, don't get it on your hands as it's real pain to get off, alcohol wipes seem to be best) Your body shop would most likely just give you some if you ask.

The holes on the ends do not line up correctly so your going to have to drill a few new ones, (you'll see once you get into it)

The mounting is different enough on those ends that you will have to cut out where the clips hold in the molding( the little rectangular holds in the molding itself that the clips clip into) Else the clips can't clip. again, you'll see what I mean if you do this. It took a little trial and error on my part but eventually I got them all on.

Don't for get you need the little plastic mounts... I got mine here...

SET CLIPS FOR MERCEDES W124 SIDE MOULDING REAR FENDER TRIM | eBay

SET CLIPS FOR MERCEDES W124 SIDE MOULDING FRONT FENDER TRIM | eBay

25 Mercedes Rocker Panel Moulding Screw Grommets 000 988 86 25 | eBay

You will need a handful of sheet metal screws also. 8mm heads. I used all the ones from my parts car, which is why they are not listed here.

Oh, and normally I buy all my parts right here, but in this case, after spending a couple hours just trying to locate the correct clips... and then seeing the sticker shock.. this was the only real alternative.

Ill probably just end up using the headlight panels I have now, My car came orig with wipers on the lights, but 87 American lights and wipers are diff.
The Euro models share the same wiper lay out as the 94-95 models, yet the headlight glass and lower moulding are diff on all 94-95 models because of the restyled hood grille, You see, before I damaged the front end I had Euro lights and euro wipers installed and fully functional, but never switched out the panels, I just drilled an extra hole in them for the euro mounting position of the arms. I figured now that its all new and painted I would start with a clean pallet ie. no extra holes, I found these wiper delete panels on a 260E in the wrecking yard, but my Euro lights are not here yet (on their way from Deutschland ) so I have not drilled any holes yet either.

NGAROVER, your cars are really nice, I saw your post about all the work you have done to your 87, Kudos, you dove way deeper than I would ever attempt, If I tried to do the job you completed I would have broke half the stuff by the end of it and the other half wouldn't have worked
now that your car is all updated and facelifted, you need to update the wheels as well, the old wheels take away from the end result you have worked so hard for, IMO.

I noticed that the on the wagon, you removed the roof rack, you didn't like it? personally I like the racks and I also like the orig. yellow fog lights better too
Very nice job on the wheel refinish, they look new again, hell, the whole car looks new, what a transformation. wow!!!!
