Heat intermittent

I have 1982 300d, the heat doesn't seem to work properly.
It seems to go off and on its own. it will not just go on if you hit the button to turn it on.

cold in pittsburgh.

minsk

shuddering

sometime when i drive my 1982 300d it will shutter or pulse when it first starts driving. thats really the only way i can explain it. you hit the gas and it gets all lurchy and shuttery. it calms down after a bit.

curious.

Mono valve and/or tube sensor tube behind glove box.....could also be the push button assembly...

Working as designed I believe. The heat doesn't come on until the engine achieves a certain operating temperature. I don't recall the temperature value offhand. To get the blower working right away hit the defrost button and then the center button. I have to do that on my 85TD because the comfort circuit isn't working.

I thought my automatic temperature control was bad, until I read the user's manual and found that it is designed a bit quirky (drunk Germans?). In winter, normally use only the "EC" button (w/ down arrow), assuming yours is the same as my 84 & 85. The ATC gives heat when it decides it can/should, and turns on the blower when it thinks you need it. That is even after installing a new mono-valve (electric hot water valve). I also tried another ATC, with no difference.
