I truely have a disease with these cars...

ok...

the ickky 82SD is back in my yard... oil loss took out a rod or main bearing... arrgh...

anyway, I'm looking at a nigh perfect condition 87 190D 2.5T... perfect body, perfect engine, low miles (180K) very clean interior and dash... but...
the transmission seems to only shift 1-2... no further.
the seller claims he drove it over 150miles like this... I cannot fathom driving this car in 2nd gear very far. top speed would only be like 30mph, and that'd be pegged on the limiter... VERY uncomfortable...
I'm thinking it's more likely to be shifting 2-3, still high rpms, but he'd be able to hit 80 before the limiter this way... much more likely...

he had it listed for 1500, but he's on the fence about selling the motor, and parting out the body, or selling the car to me for 1000... I've not seen it in person, only pics and his description... "fantastic very good tires" blah blah blah... typical "flipper" story...

I'm considering finding the money for this car, and getting it...

First step is knowing that you have a problem...

... arrgh...

I guess I'm talking to the wrong group if I wanted help resisting this thing...

yeah... the shifting issues make me SERIOUSLY consider the 5 speed swap idea...

I have a 93 300D parts car with a transmission that should be good... it'll bolt up I guess, but will it WORK in this car? Fit in this car? who knows....

Fourth step, you now own the problem.

John, you must have some voids in your yard from the thinning
of the heard a while back.

Saw a sign on the rear of a Dump Truck, "Find a need, and fill it".

That's very tempting. The only rust that is visible is on the floor. There are holes. But when it was painted black, it maybe have been "repaired" around the jack points.

This Friday I should get all the stuff to do what I have been ignoring, all the fluids and air filter stuff. Only thing I've done is tear the interior out, including the dash, and glow plugs.

You see, these cars are very intelligent, and they are excellent networkers. As soon as you lavish love on one car it runs around when you're not looking and tells all the others. Before you know it, you have a yard full of them! All of them "good deals" or "too nice to let it go to the scrap yard," or "saved from and abusive relationship."
They are difficult to resist....
Cheers!

Sometimes it just happens driving down the road...
You see another diesel Benz (fill in your type) driving your way or opposite, and wave or give a few fingers over the wheel to the other driver.
Then you check out the car in your mirror.
Then you slow down for the stoplight or stop sign.
Then you notice the driver turned around.
You linger at the stop just a bit longer.
Wave at the driver and they point to the "FOR SALE" sign you missed.
You pull over into the next parking lot and talk shop for a bit.
They only want $1200 (or whatever low price) for the car and it's running, straight, only a little rust here and there.
Then you exchange numbers and agree to get together next weekend.

It's a slippery slope out there.
