parts compatability 85 300D->79 300TD

just curious to know if somebody knows off the top of their head:

say there was an otherwise well-running 1979 300td with 250K that needed a transmission, some rear brakes, possibly rear wheel bearings, etc .(there's another thread about this)

say also that there was a roadworthy 1985 300d that had a solid power/drive-train with 150K (except for 1 weak axle) but with significant body rust

could one simply swap the cluster, transmission and entire sub-frame from the sedan to the wagon?

I can say the transmission won't work with out more modifications....the 1979 may have no vacuum hook ups on the trans, meaning all the vacuum stuff would need to be switched over....but the 79 could be a late model with a vacuum controlled only transmission...witch may make things easer.....I believe if you have both of these cars side by side it would be an some what easy swap but still maybe a bit brain boggling....

The '79 has the old CCII system with a climate control servo and the vertical pushbutton unit. Not everyone likes dealing with that system, so you should take that into account when considering the possibilities.

I retracted a comment that a sedan cylinder head doesn't have provision for an SLS pump when I reread that he's talking about a tranny and rear subframe swap. At least that's how I [re]understood the premise.

the more complicated/expensive swap could be to add the wagon SLS head to the sedan motor/transmission/diff. I would expect some driveshaft length changes at the very least.

I hadn't considered the climate control differences/issues-good point

I'm not sure how it was that I missed that the wagon in question is in fact a 1985, not 1979. No, wait. I know exactly how I missed that[6]. Sorry.

This should change some things, but entire rear subframe swap?

perhaps I shouldn't to be thinking about swapping parts around, and should just go back to lurking....

What's the reason to swap the rear subframe?
Sounds like all you need is wheel bearings and to swap some rear calipers

79 should have the 3:46 Diff and the 85 would have the 2:88 Diff. You would use the Spedo for what ever Diff you use. Spedo`s are geared to the Diff. unless you swap in the Turbo engine, using the 2:88 would make it a little doggy.

I don`t see any reason the Sub Frame would not swap over. depending on how long you decide to keep this car, and amount of rust, I would replace the Trailing Arm Bushings and Sub Frame Bushings.

Transmission would be different.
