odo repair. options?

I'm getting tired of looking at the non-moving numbers on the odo.

I know that there are kits to repair them, are they really diy?

isn't there someone on the forum who fixes these?

I've done it myself without a kit. Just pulled the gear off, roughed it up, put it back on and carefully applied some green locktite to only that gear.

which car?
yes, it's really DIY...
fairly simple really.
you either need to knurl the shaft on your 123 odo, or replace the stripped gears in the other models...

on the 123 it's this gear

nearly 100% of the time.
on other models, the soft plastic gears loose their teeth...

if you are careful, when you remove the speedo, you can use
this shaft to push out the digit shaft since it's easy to pull out and replace...

Just did mine since I needed to set the miles to something close to correct on this replacement speedo. As others have said, push out that shaft, (i used a long punch of a slightly less diameter), put a bit of a knurl on it (not too much, it still has to go back in the hole!), and tap it back in.

Don't use glue or loktite or anything else. There's a guide out there that says to. It's a one way ticket to frustration.

I fixed the odo on a 123 by pushing the shaft out with a drill bit; exposing the spot on the shaft where the gear is as shown in vstech's post above; pinching it (gently) with wire cutters; pushing the whole thing back together. Very easy job - did not even have to take apart the odo to get access to the shaft. On my daughter's 126 I took the odo out, fifured out which gears had broken teeth, and ordered replacement gears, which went in very easily. On the 126 the instructions with the replacement gear said to be certain to blow out the odo with compressed air and to be sure the left over broken bits (gear teeth etc) are all gone and won't gum up the works.
