I did, drained the tc and the trans cooler....my trans was overfilled and burnt the fluid so I tried to get out as much fluid as I could....with out draining the cooler, it would have took 4.5 quarts....

If you search "transmission fluid" you will find many posts. Some are adamant about using a certain type, others say just about any fluid will work. The later seems more true since people do use many different fluids with no issues that point to the fluid. Also, these are older designs without electronic lock-up torque converters and such that can be picky about fluid.

I had the same question ~1 yr ago. As I recall, I put ATF+4 (Chrysler) in one W123, then settled on Mercon VI (Ford) as best (after reading posts here), though I recall somebody saying that wasn't best (forgot why) and Mercon IV was more appropriate. In my 60's Chryslers I used to use Type F (most friction) but switched to ATF+4 since recommended for 90's Torqueflites (same basic design). One advantage of ATF+4 is that it is fully synthetic (even the cheapest store brand), but it does cost more. I think several other types are also full synthetic now.
