Special tool for running your diesel engine without the Turbo installed

Here is a DIY Special tool for running your diesel engine without the Turbo installed.

I made this from a front brake pad backing plate (all pad material broken off).

The template was compressed cardboard, pressed/squeezed into the Turbo oil feed housing with small plywood blocks and a C-clamp.

Then trimmed with X-ACTO Cutting Tools.

The template was held against the cleaned brake pad backing plate, and a carbide scribe marked the outlines.

A cutoff wheel or sawzall worked for the outer edges, and light filing took off the razor sharp edges.

The two holes where done on a small spacer wood block held in my drill press vice.
Note: the wood block is only there to avoid drilling into my vice.

The template was used again to make a custom gasket.

Am assuming this is not for on the driving since you need something to replace the empty space Turbo leaves; so there is a continuous Intake Manifold and continuous Exhaust.

This is a diagnostic TOOL...

I have found it is the (cheap) easiest way to absolutely verify a BAD turbo.

If the engine runs perfect WITHOUT the turbo, and smoking or horrible with the turbo.
The answer is a simple binary = good / bad...

It does burble and blub.

The prime concern is hot plasma.
I use it for quick, around the block, power / smoke test runs without damage.

I try to follow "Keep it simple, stupid" as a design principle.
KISS principle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
the 'stupid' refers to the relationship between the way things break and the sophistication available to fix them.

"Kelly Johnson" would appreciate your user name.

The 617 sounds amazing without an exhaust manifold. If anyone builds an NA rat rod with a 617, make up some zoomies for it.

Zoomies??? I had to look that one up, hadn`t heard that term before.

Definitely make our 617 or 240 look better.

I will settle for the picture definition. In my mind you could zoom all over that. A no brainer at best.

Nothing so wimpy...

I tested it with a junk oil feed fitting

attached to a grease gun

that is equipped with a pressure guage.

The gasket failed at 900 PSI..
