wrong heat shield?

Just bought some heat shields from a local shop here.
The guy swore it was the right one and would work.
It is different. Is it OK to use?

In my experience, the shields with the smaller inside diameter work better than the larger diameter ones. However, going from large to small could pose a problem with used injector nozzles with significant erosion to the face.

the 10mm hole is for the om617 engines vs. 7.5mm hole is for 601,2,3. You should be OK. If you're worrried, just get the 10mm hole type. they are only around $2 bucks a pop.

Evidently, there were some folks in Stuttgart who were not aware of that.

The parts catalog for the 617.952 engine shows the larger Heat Shield
believe it is a 10mm hole. I looked up a 84 W123 300D
Part# 617-017-03-60
1984 Mercedes-Benz 300D Base Sedan - Fuel Injection - Page 1

This listing for a 87 300TD W124. shows the smaller 7.5mm hole
Part# 601-017-00-60
1987 Mercedes-Benz 300TD Base Wagon - Fuel Injection - Page 1

From what I have read, either heat shield will work on a 616/617 engine.

Per EPC
The correct MB# 6170170360
Are for the OM615, 616, 617 engine 1968 - 1985.

FYI:
I have used Either heat shield with no issues, since 1986..

I only insist on a matched set on each engine.

as Hunter said - both will work, I used a set of VW ones in my 606 engine, they have the same hole too.

Ah ... gotcha. LOL. Maybe he's right. I better tell the folks at Autohauz and other places to correct their part listings to reflect that update. My bad.
