Its a heat wave today, 27 degrees! The 300SD started like it was summer. It had acclimated itself to 0F starts lately.

Ya been driving the 240D for the work commute this week. Alfa isn't quite finished and the SLK has developed a miss, only 50k miles on the car, didn't show up until the cold weather and no CEL so I'm currently clueless, heading to the gasser boards with that one.

Other than the unplugged hard start at the marina at 6f, the 240 has been great, it's making good power in this frigid weather and I filled up yesterday with a 35mpg tank...according to speedo which my GPS shows as being pretty darn close.

Grin

Detroit ambient temperature -7° F, wind chill factor expected today between 25 and 30 degrees below zero during the morning hours.

And it started after one full glow.

Love it..

Good compression is the key....

At around 400 lbs you are OK in cold weather, but under that you will have problems...

Anyone with valves out of adjustment or other compression issues will have a difficult or impossible task starting COLD.

The worse the loss of compression issue is, the higher the ambient temperature failure point will be.

The ability to start a diesel engine in serious to extreme cold is a very good indicator of engine maintenance and overall condition.

Too cold for me...I hate it when it is below 60°F here!!!!

Coldest starts we ever did with the old 617 300SD was 18°F+ and it fired instantly, even after several days in those temps, but it has very good compression....

It was -3F this morning when I left my house. Used the TDI today and gave the 300SD a break. It would have started fine however. It did on Saturday when it was 0F....

Same here Nov/March due to the autozoo offer that was posted here. I am still keeping it parked at times due to the shytty traction on icy/hilly roads around here. But I know it is there and ready if I need it.

I can`t imaging that kind of cold.

Since moving from the waters edge in Kali to Nevada, it is a bit colder here.
Been down in the low 20`s and the 240 is sitting out side till the garage is cleared out from the move. She starts right up w/o much of a problem.
Did see 12 deg one morning. I am using 15w-40 Synthetic.

Now the old Ford 6.9 is another story with some GP`s out, have to use a heat gun down the intake to get her to belch smoke and rattle and shake,
