Reamed glow plugs a month ago, took them out today and caked in carbon
I had problems with my glow plugs almost immediately after I did my injector job. Part of the injector job was me reaming out the glow plug holes and wiping down the glow plugs, but now they are covered in soot, worse than before. Any ideas on the cause?
I can think of a few things that possibly could be to blame not sure though: 1. Blocked off vacuum line to EGR to disable it (doesn't make sense to me but I will admit I know little about its function) 2. I reused the injector heat shields, only after I cleaned them and uncrushed them before putting them pack in. They should have been fine but I have no clue at this point, but my new ones that were supposed to be in 2 weeks ago when I did the job are in now so I need to pick them up. 3. I did have to crank and crank the engine to get it to start, but since it was only running on 4 cylinders, I had to go back to the step I skipped of purging the injector lines of air. 4. I cranked over the engine without the injectors in to clear out and fluids or debris, maybe stuff stuck to the glow plugs? I'm pretty stumped on this and I don't really want to put in my new glow plugs before I solve the issue.

FYI
As per our phone discussion...
We discussed the Valve adjustment needs to be every 15000 miles or once per year, which ever comes first. If the valve adjustment has been put off to long, you may need to adjust, drive, repeat valve adjustment several times due to carbon built up on valve seat/face breaking away. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/107729-valve-adjustment-om615-616-617-fyi.html We discussed over tightening the glow plug nuts http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/137732-glow-plugs-link-thread.html#post1019018 We discussed re-using injector heat shields, and why it is a last resort http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/211750-injector-heat-shield-nozzle-prechamber-collar-nailing-link-thread.html *************** 0W-40 or 5W-40 synthetic engine oil is the cheapest way to increase the cold cranking speed = easier starting. I think I solved the issue
I just tested all of the glow plugs. They tested fine, but I noticed some of them had rust on the post right where the nut would have screwed down onto (probably didn't notice it before cause I was working in poor light conditions). I'll check the wiring harness itself in a little but I'll probably just have to try to clean the nuts with a little electrical parts cleaner. The new GPs are going in but I'll save these just in case.

I put the new glow plugs in and drove it around some and took one of them out today and completely covered in carbon again. I still need to replace the heat shields (coming in from Pelican sometime this week) but is there anything else that could be causing these issues?

Pulled them and think it was the heat shields or I didn't clean the sealing surface well enough, though one of the injector ports was covered in diesel, but that may have just dripped from the injector or injector line. Each of the injector tips was caked with around the center but stopped right where the edge of the heat shield would have been (maybe the crush section of the heat shields did seal?) and the underside of the heat shield was also caked. Judging by the fact the car is still running as smoothly as when I first got the injectors in, I don't think any damage was done (hopefully). As I was pulling the injectors out, UPS showed up with a package from Pelican parts, but alas it was not the package with the heat shields in it, but my tie rods and transmission mount .

Hmm
There is a low possibility that I forgot to mention.
Stunningly BAD fuel = incredibly low cetane diesel will coke the cylinders.. Here is data on the topic: Diesel owners need to know fuel data Diesel owners need to know fuel data - PeachParts Mercedes ShopForum Warning ALL Diesel Owners http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/309367-warning-all-diesel-owners.html#post2841158 Bad smelling fuel, what to do http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/94728-bad-smelling-fuel-gag-gasp-choke.html .
