Stop thief.....

I was on the phone with a local 1978 240D automatic owner, and he laid the phone in the center console set for speaker at a stop light to concentrate on driving...

(door opening, screaming).
Get out or I blow you face off.
(scuffling sounds, door slam).
Damn, go, go, go, go, you piece of ^%*&..
(Sound of the engine losing power, stumbling, shutdown).
What the #$%^ !!!
(Sound of the engine cranking).
Cursing, cursing, cursing, cursing, cursing, incoherent rage screaming!!!
(door opening, slamming, feet running).
** I consider calling the police, though I have no location**
Gut busting laughter approaching.
(door opening, fumbling with phone).
Gasping in laughter / pain, he explained the car jacker made it 1/2 a block...

WHY you ask ?

Because when the call began, his top speed was 5 MPH..

I raced to his location 2 miles away, and changed filters in record time.
He found the threatening plastic cap gun crushed on the driver floor..
We got kicked out of my favorite coffee shop because we could not stop laughing...

He wanted to car jack a 240D? I would think he would pick something a bit newer and more sporty.

That is fantastic.

I'm without other words really. It's just awesome.

The guy should start using his car's door locks. That's the first thing that gets set after car starting in my car.

Locking the doors is never a bad idea.

However, unless you have armoured glass, not much of a difference if someone has a pistol aimed at your head.

Whatever the car is worth, it's worth less than the chance it isn't a toy gun.

Sounds like something that would have got written into an episode of The Wire.

X2 - We don't remember to lock the doors at the house half the time and some of the cars are left unlocked in the driveway with the keys inside. Unless I was stuck somewhere due to family or employment, I'd move to somewhere folks respect other folks.

This answers the age old question of whether you can chase down a thief in a 240D.

Earl is one of the parolees who works at Villalobos Pit Bull Rescue Center in New Orleans (See "Pit Bulls and Parolees" on Animal Planet). When he was interviewing for his job he was asked how he got put in jail and he said "I wanted to be an armed robber. I wasn't very good at it - got caught on my first try". I always chuckle at that as he almost sounded like it was his career choice, kind of like saying "when I grow up I want to be a fireman".

Anyhow, I guessing that this robber wasn't very good at it, either. I suspect he'll wind up in jail shortly. If he's lucky the pits will save him like they saved Earl.

A few years ago, I posted a thread here, titled 'The sad Demise of Beirut Taxi', after my Virginia Beach neighbor had his 240D stolen out of his driveway. When they eventually found the car, the dirtbag had torched it!
Glad this ended better.

Happy Motoring, Mark
