Small world. I used to work in North Andover at the Eagle Tribune. My sister may be in the used car market since she had a head-on with another car while driving her newish VW Jetta.

IMHO:
-Factory reman engine
-Over 200k miles and it's not using oil (somewhat silly way to tell... compare the reverse lights. Bad oil burners will be black on the driver's side)

Only 146,000 miles on this one and no mention of a replacement engine. A little early to tell if this one is in the process of bending a connecting rod.

Skippy,

I agree with your conclusions. My 350SDL doesn't have the proverbial sooted up reverse light. Since I'm in the Northeast (road salt), most examples (if they were from the NE) have rust out jack points etc. Mine is from Norfolk, Virginia (Norfolk is almost in NC) and is spotless underneath.

I've strived to change/check the oil faithfully and always check the dipstick at fill ups. It doesn't seem to use oil, and as I said, it doesn't exhibit much nailing, has good acceleration (boost). I do see smoke at night, in the car headlights behind me (if I have to accelerate), but I believe that's normal fuel burn....

When I spoke with the PO, he had done a leak down test, which showed good compression. Short of tearing the head off and checking the piston/deck clearance, the outward signs and testing seems to indicate the motor in good running order.

Even my indy mechanic has mentioned how nice it runs (and what a "nice" example it is), and he sees quite a few 603s in his shop.....He's done fuel filter & purges, oil changes, FI return lines and rear sway bar links on her.

Not sure what else I can do.....

I don't think W126s were hand built, Diesel or otherwise - The Gallery

In the Daimler-Benz car assembly plant in Sindelfingen, separate production facilities were set up for the W126. Workplace design and product quality were equally improved through the use of the latest production technologies then available such as automatically controlled welding units (top photo) and new assembly fixtures design to avoid laborious overhead work...

Is it me, or do I see some things as inconsistent?

146K miles, but a repaint has been required?

The driver's seat wear seems excessive for 146K.

The car has not seen NE winters but has Massachusetts license plates on it? (maybe he's military though, so this means nothing).

It is a beautiful car, but without knowing what "stuff" it needs, it'd be hard for most here to consider, despite the low price.

I do wish you good luck on your new venture.

The car is 24 years old. If it's lived outside for most of its life, need for a repaint sounds entirely plausible. My mom's Caprice lived outside its whole life and got a repaint when it was about ten years old.

The seat does look nearly as bad as mine with 330,000 miles. However, I think most seat wear occurs on entering and exiting the vehicle. If many short trips were taken, that would explain the wear.
