Any body here from Arizona

I need to find out what the State of Arizona requires to register my 87 300D I know I need to have it insured but my friend that lives in Goodyear was not sure if they do test diesels or not any body here knows?

It will require emissions testing before you can register it in AZ. At lest in Maricopa county, ie Phoenix.

Can you describe me how is the test is it just visual or is a complete test tanks for answering

I *heard* it is visual smoke test. Obscuring a gray line on a mirror.

I had to do an emissions test on my '76 240D back in July when I bought it. They hooked up the tube on the tailpipe and did a full test. It passed thankfully.

I live in Tucson, Arizona.

Each year I need to get my 84 190D 2.2 Federal car emissions tested.

They check the car VIN to ensure it is the same on the registration. They check the engine bay visually (so leave your EGR in place, maybe use the bb trick), they push on the hood to vetify your shocks are good, and they visually inspect the fuel tank cap. Then they have you bring the car up to 30mph on the dyno while they use an exhaust opacity analyzer to determine how much smoke your car produces as it runs. As long as it's under the limit, you pass.

Since my car is Federal, it has no EGR, no air restrictor flap, no catalyst or traps, and no airbag or seatbelt pretensioner. If your car has any of those, leave them installed and intact. It's a felony to remove stock emissions equipment and you'll fail the test.

I have gotten 00.0% opacity on both tests that I've done so far. My engine was up to operating temp and it's N/A so there is no ALDA or smoking when you gun it.

Diesels 1967 and newer are required to test each year.

If you live in the middle of nowhere outside of a major city, you may be exempt but I don't know where those areas specifically are. Sorry. :c

My sister's car is an '85 190D 2.2 WITH California emissions. She doesn't have any issues either and her tests have both been 0% opacity as well. All of her emissions hardware is intact and functional.

You need insurance in AZ, and you have to maintain it continually. If you cancel your policy, the carrier alerts the AZ DMV and they give you a certain time frame to get insured again and prove it. If you don't, they suspend your registration and plates.

My registration was ~$20 just a few weeks ago. :) Good for another year!

I hope I've helped answer some questions for you. :D

Basically if you live outside the two metro areas, Tucson or Phoenix, you'll probably be exempt.

Unless you commute in to those areas for work regularly.

In Phoenix there's no check for anything besides the emissions stuff. They don't care about the state of your shocks or anything else. But if it's emissions related you'd better have it all intact. They stick a pipe on the exhaust and run it at speed testing the opacity and particulates. My 240D which blew quite a cloud of smoke out the back at high revs passed so unless the engine is really in poor shape it'll probably be ok. The trick I always use to find which test stations are near a freeway, what times of day and day of week they are least busy and then take the day off work. I drive at speed around the freeways for several hours and then exit the freeway and straight into the testing station. Never had a problem yet.

Tanks guys for all your answers Arizona is a tough state for diesels in California any 95 or older is exempt from the smog test

cooljjay 01-29-2014 02:06 AM

Arizona is not tough on my diesel....well at least the part I live in....no emission test and my registration for a year is the same price as a mcdonalds meal. Plus your drivers license doesn't expire for 30 years. But there are some crazy laws....and taxes up here...our food is even taxed...don't even ask me what each tax is for....

When I lived in Tucson, I filled my 1980 wagon with a full tank of B99, when I took it to get emissions tested, they had me change lanes after the first test - then in the second test they passed me. I asked why the lane change, they said the first test came back with 0.00 opacity and they thought the machine was bad. I never made it a habbit to run biodiesel in my cars, but a friend in Tucson told me about this trick and it worked. The B99 burns really, really clean and has alot less of the particulate that dino diesel contains. Worth a try.
