Smile My new 1978 300SD

On 01/25/2014 my wife and I drove 429 miles to purchase 'Phil', Doktor Bert's 78 300SD W116, with 1,344,246 miles.

I am beyond pleased with my purchase. This is one sweet car.

For many years I have read forum posts to increase my knowledge on troubleshooting and maintaining my MB diesels. This is my first post.

Doktor Bert has done all the hard work on this one. There are a few minor things left for me to tinker with on this car.

Every minor issue was disclosed prior to the purchase. (Speedometer error as a result of changing from a 3.07 to a 2.47 differential, seat condition, etc.).

After a quick jaunt up to Doktor Bert's workplace in Palm Springs to pick up spare parts (greatly appreciated ), the long, enjoyable, trek home was a breeze. I pulled in at 5:30 am and went straight to bed. Mission accomplished!!

As things get resolved, I will try to post before, during and after photos.

First I need to prepare the 'Grasshopper', my 1979 245DL Volvo station wagon (with 5 speed manual and electric overdrive) for sale.

For now a few photos of 'Phil' at home in his new driveway.

Congrads also! Always nice to see a car stay with a benz nut and not someone who will drive it into the ground. Also it would be a pleasure to drive a car with that many miles on it and brag about it

I'm sure you got your money's worth, whatever you paid for it. With all of the time I have and money I have into my 300SD, I'd never get it all back, and I know that yours has a lot more invested into it than mine.

It must be nice to not only have a car that runs great, but looks great, too.

Talk about "provenance".

Incredible mileage.

@unkl300d: I think the engine went 1.25 million before an overhaul. Truly a legendary W116.

@Alec: Congratulations! You have one amazing 300SD there.

Congratulations on you new MB, and welcome to the forum.

That car has definitely had it`s share of 100mph Italian tune up`s blowing across the Desert.

Alec,

So glad the car went to a true enthusiast...Enjoy it. we drove it literally everywhere, everyday, for years on end. I would have made even more improvements if I could have taken it out of the road long enough...

Charlie
My wife drove it to Phoenix in the Summer of 2011 and set the cruise on 100 mph for most of the trip with the A/C on...I appraoch every motor we ever built like an endurance racing engine...Build them right and keep them maintained and they will work for you...

I will add my congratulations as well. I used to have a very similar car, and enjoyed every mile of driving it:

That's always the Q worth asking. How many miles & time intervals before the engine's internal, key components were replaced to get there.......?
