Sticking Rear Brakes
84 300D
After driving a few miles the rear brakes (just the rears) begin to close, producing noticeable drag while driving. They get red hot. Eventually the car won't move at all until the whole brake system cools off. After an hour or so the brakes cool, and the car will move again. Sometimes the issue arises after just a few miles, while at other times I can make several 20-mile round trips wiithout incident. The car's now parked until I can figure things out. Since just the rear wheels are affected I guess the problem is be related to the parking brake. What am I going to look for? When I drive the car the parking brake sets and seems to release just fine. Once I get the sticking issue sorted out will I need to plan on replacing the rotors since they got hot? Mark |

If the problem presented suddenly and affects both sides equally, the master cylinder would be at the top of my list of probable suspects. It's pretty unlikely that a caliper/hose problem would present simultaneously and equally on both sides.

After it seizes up on you again loosen the Line on the Master Cylinder that goes to the Rear Brakes.
If Fluid you get a little spurt of pressurized Fluid there is something in the Master Cylinder keeping the Fluid in the lines from returning. If you don't get that spurt of fluid try loosening the Brake Bleeder Screws. If you get a spurt of fluid or you Calipers loosen up it is an issue with the Rubber Hoses. If neither of the above is the issue it could be your Brake Pads and Rotors are worn so thin that the Calipers Pistons are sort of jamming or there is a buch of rusted Gunk keeping the Caliper Pistons from returning. While you are inspecting the Bark Pads you can check to see if the Parking Brake is the problem.

Problem finally repeated itself today. Cracked the rear line fitting on the MC and got the spurt of pressurized fluid. Just like Diesel911 predicted -- thanks for the tip! So I'll put in a new MC. The parking brake looks OK, but I do need to adjust it. I'll also need to put new pads in the rear calipers. Fluid change too. Is there an advantage to DoT 4 over the old DoT 3 I had been using?

DOT 4 has a higher boiling point.
