Fuel Filters

Changed the primary and main fuel filter on my 130,000 mile 1985 300D (routine maintenance). Car was running beautifully. I primed the system using the hand pump on the injection pump and the car started and ran for about 1 minute and then died and would not restart. I primed the system again and it still will not start. During this work I broke the vacuum valve in the power brake hose (brittle) , but I do not think this would cause the no start problem. Any suggestions. I live in So California and it is 75degrees.

You might try cracking open the injector lines at the injectors and closing them off once they start squirting out diesel. That'll bleed out the air from the high pressure side of the IP.

Do I loosen the injector lines one at a time and crank the engine until fuel comes out? Thanks.

Crack all the nuts where the Hard lines connect to the Injectors.
Turn the engine over, or have your lovely assistant turn it over.
While you are at the ready with your handy 17mm wrench.

Then as you see fuel start to leak around the threads, tighten that nut, then the next one etc... by the time you get to the third one that shows fuel she should kick over, and tighten the last two. she might bang and knock some. it is just the last bit of air in the lines purging out.

The primer Pump will not purge the air from the IP or hard lines.

Did you prefill the Spin On filter before attaching it? If you don`t, then this can cause issues even though you pump on the primer pump to fill it.

Do you have the old twist and pump primer or the new black push n prime?

The older style are known weak points, you may have destroyed it when priming...
