Cleaning an Injector Pump
I have a spare IP from a 1984 300D. This pump and engine sat for many years on a pallet. It has 130,000 miles on it.
What is the procedure to clean the gunk out of the pump? Is is possible to clean without disassembly? Could it be cleaned by putting a feed hose on the input side into a container of some solvent, and then run the pump with an electric drill to pump the solvent all through the pump?

if the injector lines are still attached to the pump, and the injectors, I'd just connect the fuel lines to a container of clean diesel, and pump the primer until all the air bubbles stop, then loosen the injector lines, and crank the motor over until clear fuel pumps out of each nut. tighten them up, and enjoy the motor.
I'd NOT pull the pump and run it on a drill...

It is not on an engine. The IP is sitting in a box.

If it was sealed, there shouldn't be any gunk inside. Diesel can sit for years without degrading. The worst problem is biologic slime can grow if there is water, but that shouldn't affect the pump. Just turn it over with the engine first, without the injector tubes to flush the oil fuel out (cover holes to manage the squirts). If the "crankcase" of the pump was exposed, you might need to drain and clean the oil inside. You might remove the vacuum "stop valve" on the aft end, pour the old oil out. If looks gunky, pour diesel fuel inside, slosh around, and drain. The pump gets oil from the engine, probably from splash, flow-over from the front hole (haven't fooled with that).
