Hard to believe what a cold hearted beast she is

I went to jump in today and it just didn't want to start, jumped in the Mercedes support vehicle(toyota tacoma) when i got back checked the glow plugs, one bad #4, she is a cold hearted beast with just one plug down.

How cold did it get over night?
You did not mention if you had an abnormal acting Glow Plug Light.

If you are up for an experiment.
Remove all the Glow Plugs and ream or otherwise clean out the Carbon from the GP Holes.
Test all of the ones believed to be good on a Battery to see if the Tips get hot first.
Get a new Plug and re-install the good ones and see if it starts OK after that.
A few people have said that just reaming out the Carbon helped with Cold Starts.

What Maint. have you done to the Car?

You also had a thread about a Manual Glow Plug set-up. Was that straightned out?

Yep i hacked the OEM relay and have a switch in the cabin that cycles the OE relay, it's still working good this way, dash light is not working with this set up, but i have thought about putting it back in the circuit.

#5 was bad before now #4, time to just change them all and be done with it, i looked in the #5 hole with a bore scope and didn't see any noticeable buildup.... but the GP would have kept any out of where i would be looking with the scope anyway.

I have changed oil filter and oil, pulled the tank prefilter and replaced hoses there as well as the other fuel filters and all hoses, trans fluid and flushed by pulling hose(i had the fluid so i just did a change, i still want to do the filter and will change fluid again at that time), coolant, recharged a/c (a couple days ago before it got cold ) battery, belts, new tires, cleaned and lubed the sunroof, removed the most intrusive security alarm on the face of the planet, removed the magnum PI phone system, pulled fixed 1 broken spring on a back seat(think it was a fluke it actually had a narrow part in the metal) pulled all 4 wheels and checked brakes, pulled apart the center console and cleaned out the gummed up switches, blocked off the vac lines for the egr valve, cleaned some clogged vacuum lines and banjo bolts, replaced vac lines, lubed hood and everything that moves under it..... and stuff i am missing

need to do the oil cooler lines, the power steering filter and fluid and return hose, trans filter and fluid again, want to do the window regulators they bump a bit(all but the drivers), start on the suspension and rubber items(had a list in a shopping cart and it was all bad manufacturers so slammed the brakes on that project) seats, relocate the switches from the center console and put in some drink holders and a couple other things i have been thinking about.

actually i am thinking about getting a new GP relay, hacking it with an override adding a chime that activates after 1 to 2 minutes after you have overridden the OE equipment, also putting in a thermostat that would cycle off the override at a yet undermined temp and add monitoring for each GP(either in the cabin or under the hood).

You have done most of the key items, I always also check cooling systems as well.

I'd be interested in details on the chime when you do it. Good luck!

BTW I noticed you didn't mention temp in the area and/orr oil viscosity. Also, do you have/use a block heater?

many people don't want to remove a plug and install a screw-in block heater.

In my travels I picked up a Makita impact wrench that will do the trick, it's a little heavy but it is a 1" drive and produces 1080 lbs-ft of torque.

Yes it's a plug-in, needs a 20 amp circuit, but man, what I job it does!

I don't see anything in this list that shows when the valves were adjusted...

very very good catch.

nope i have not done the valves yet, they didn't have a valve cover gasket locally and i ordered one with the parts i ordered last night, however i did do a compression leak down test right after i bought it and it was good...... so will actually be curious to see how the valves are when i get a chance to do them.

I know that my OM602 nearly refused to start when it was down 1 plug. I had to hold it and let it crank for nearly 30 seconds! New plugs and I can start (probably beyond) down to -15 without a block heater!

you might have very tired engine and some low compression issues and
valves totally stiffed... or the hacked relay is demonizing you..

few days ago I started with only 2 of 5 gp's on 15F with 10 sec cranking.
as JD posted above I guess 617 with 5 good gp's will start with no issues
at -15F or even lower temp. But you got to have healthy and adjusted
engine for that one.

p.s got to have....did I say this properly..or is it have to have ?

.
