late w123 vacuum replacement tip

Today I replaced the Vacuum Pump on my 300D.

As you might know when bolting the Vacuum Pump back onto the engine, you have to work against the spring in the Vacuum Pump, and the Vacuum Pump won't sit flush against the engine.

I've read some people rotate the engine by hand to get the point of least resistance.
Instead what I did was to get 6mmx20 bolts, which are longer than the 6mmx16 factory bolts.
The extra length allowed me to get the bolt to start threading.

I tightened down the two hidden bolts to get the Vacuum Pump flush enough to do the top four.
With those four almost tightened all the way down, I backed out the two longer bolts, whose holes were now flush enough against the engine to get the correct size threaded in.

.

Did you replace with a new pump or replace with the diaphragm kit?

It was a new one.

Unfortunately this is the later piston style without the diaphragm.
I say unfortunately because I think I've read the diaphragm can be replaced with the Vacuum Pump still bolted to the engine.

I think theres a rebuild kit for the later piston style but it costs more than a new pump(?!)

I have the early type (1979) and ya need to remove the vac pump in order to replace the diaphragm.

I think the kit was like $20 back then.

BUT ya have to know how to do it otherwise it will fail early.
many years ago my Indie mech tried it and it lasted a whole 2-3 weeks. Ended up installing a new one.
I still have the old one, which can theoretically be restored.
