1987 300d 1400 road trip armed with duct tape and AAA. Am I crazy?

I would not normally do this with a 27 year old car with 113k miles on it, but my Subaru made the trip with 177k on it and I've been driving the merc 140 miles a day so I'm feeling comfortable. Do I even need the duct tape?

113k is nothing! I don't know what the tape would do for you. Just bring internet access to this forum and you should be fine.

thread two...

Hmmm... I'm thinking your cooling system should get SERIOUS attention before you leave.

No cell phone? That's crazy.

I drive my 190DT like it was a new car. It only has 325K miles on it, after all.

Yeah until you hit 250k ++ its still a baby of the diesel world. I travel with basic hand tools and zip ties lots of zip ties. If the vehicle is in good shape i don't worry about the mileage.

I don't plan on the SDs breaking in under 1400 mi. Take fuel filters, trans fluid & oil and go.

Well said. I've been in 450,000 mile cars I'd trust to take me to Alaska, and I've been in 50,000 mile cars I wouldn't trust to the end of the driveway.

How well you've taken care of it is what decides just how crazy you are.

Sorry. I thought I started a thread but couldn't find it so I thought my hard cider got the better of me.

Mileage has never bothered me on cars, it's the age that make things go bad.
