Running the water pump with pantyhose on an OM617

Anybody done this? Does it work? I'd be idling the engine, nothing else.

If you're just doing a test you can get "universal" belts. Pantyhose/zip ties/ twine work too, just make sure it's turning it.

You know women that wear panty hose and will take them off so you can use them on your engine?

I usually have to work harder.

Have you experimented with what's the best type of knots to use on a panty hose? How many minutes/miles have you gotten out of a panty hose belt?

When I was in the Army an Army Truck Driver did it. He stopped some German Girl and got the Panty Hoes from Her and got His Truck on the Road. An article about it was in the Stars and Stripes.

Dead serious. I'm sure some knots are better than others for a panty hose. I am looking for actual experience using a panty hose as an emergency belt.

300 miles on a panty hose is amazing, 7 seconds what good is it? So it depends on the quality of the panty hose? I imagine for the panty hose to work and get you out of a bind in an emergency, it must be tight enough to grip and not slip? If it slips, it will burn up and break?

How long will those link V belts last and what kind of tools do you need to install them?

Crank to water pump on cars as a temporary emergency type thing. Panty hose have been used thousands of times by people. Even the link belt sucks in comparison as there is no provision to get tension unless really forcing the belt on after the needed length is estimated. The panty hose instead stretch to provide traction tension when installing.

It also helps that the power requirements of car water pumps seem low to me although I have never estimated them. Especially at idle and that is why panty hose work in my opinion.

Short test no harm. Engine can be run at an idle with no water pump function for at least a few minutes as well. Or I should qualify this. Most of the older diesel engines are slow to build heat if the cooling system is full at idle.

I posted links to the knots that have worked for me.

IMO the panty hose option is desperation.

Link V belts last a long time, if you DON'T over tension or exceed their speed rating.
I suggest you not exceed 1600 - 2000 RPM, as I have seen the Link V belts shred at higher RPM.
A Link V belt will get me to 50 MPH = a reasonable speed to reach parts/repair.
For best results you need to release the alternator (fully back off) tension adjustment, once Link V belt is installed use roughly 1/4 - 1/2 of normal tension.

I guess my question is one of spelling or intention.

Did you mean

panty hose (the stockings) or

panty hoes (those who most often wear the stockings?

Whatever turns his pump I imagine. Both have function. The second option can cause you to overheat though.

When you change your V belt, throw the old one in the trunk. New one shreds in BFE, install your old one.
