W124 Pushed By Wind

Afternoon all,

Just got back from work and man was my 124 getting pushed around by the wind!

I can really only think of two things that I have not replaced:
1) Front LCA Ball Joints
2) Rear Wheel Carrier Bushing

Most everything else has been replaced:
-tie rod assy
-center drag link
-idler arm bushing
-struts
-strut mounts
-rear multilinks
-rear lower control arm bushings
-rear sway bar links
-rear shocks
-all 4 springs

What do you guys think?

I'm not sure any of those things are going cause the wind to stop.

How windy is it? My W123 has a fairly new front end and I was getting pushed around quite badly the other day. Crosswinds were in the 30-50 mph range. It would have been really bad on the bike.

You know that is an excellent question. I think I checked my phone once on the way home and it said gusts of 21 mph. I travel east-west on the turnpike..

Just checked the weather near work :

Wind:
SW at 21 mph
gusting to 37 mph

They are snow tires. This would be their second season. I'm up for new 'regular' tires this year. When I bought the car it came with Michelin Primacy MXV4s. They were 5-6 years old. I'm planning on buying a new set of them or maybe something else not quite sure yet though.

My reason for asking about treadwear is to gauge how the alignment is. hart to say on old winter tires... but if there is feathering, or outer/inner wear, you may need toe adjust... front AND rear...

all it takes in a stray uro part, or a single curb tap to throw out an alignment, but the dealer may have had a bad day when they did yours too...

was the alignment BEFORE all the linkage in the rear/subframe stuff was changed?

Yeah, I'd take a look at the sway bar link bushings and the lower link which goes from the front of the axle carrier to the chassis. One of them could have gone ttts up.

The solution is to drive a 1970 VW bus that has a worn out front axle beam for a few days then get back in the MB.

Some things to think of:

When you are driving against / across constant wind, the steering wheel is turned to counteract this. If the wind speed goes up, the car will be pushed back requiring more steering. If the wind slows, the car will jump towards the direction you are holding the steering wheel.

If the car does not wander in near windless conditions, the car is fine.

Try driving in the Colombia gorge where I live...37 mph gusts are a light breeze out here.

Yes. All suspension part that I replaced were replaced before the alignment.

As per gerryvz's advice I used all ultra high quality URO parts.

Actually the rear end multi-link hit was Meyle. But I've used that same kit on my W201 without issue. The rest was proper brands or MB Genuine.

The car does not wander in near windless conditions, just when it get gusty.

So it sounds like nothing is wrong, but I've gotta send the car up to the shop so they can extract a sheared exhaust manifold stud anyway so I'll have them just check over stuff. I usually send the car up to them every few months just for a general check over. I drive nearly 3K every month so frequent checkups are a good idea imo.

Thanks for all your input guys. Much appreciated.
