No good deed goes unpunished - my day of work on Klaus....

Ever start fixing things and, by the end of the day, you've broken more things than you've fixed?

I set out to replace the lion's share of rotted vacuum lines on my 87 300TD (Klause) - and to reattach my ALDA (in an effort to get my turbo working again). Well - got most of the biggest leaker's taken care of - but snapped off the little nipple on brake booster hard line (ithe 61b connection on item #140 seen on the vacuum diagram). Wrapped the open connection with electrical tape and put a golf tee in the open line. Now the car won't shut off on it's own (maybe related ;-) I have still good brakes though.

The ALDA needs to be adjusted (evidently) because the car now has no guts and still the turbo does not come on.

The good news is shifting is much tighter, and my radio gets good FM reception (now that I manually extended the antenna).

I parked Klaus nose to nose with Seabiscut (my newly acquired 87 300D) so I can stare and compare the lines, I know I must have mis-routed something.

After I order a new booster line I'm going outside to work some more. At least it is a nice day !

Some Progress.....

Progress - After working snout to snout with my two operational diesels, I determined that all of my vacuum line routing was spot on. I rechecked each connection to make sure everything was tight too.

Shutoff problem: I noticed the stop lever would not stay down after I manually shut off the engine. I figured it had to do with the brake booster nipple that broke off, so I pulled the golf tee out and attached my hand-vac and applied 10psi - that worked. The stop lever pulled down. Started the car and shut it off, everything worked. So I ordered the replacement booster hose from Pelican Parts (third order this month - by the time it's all done, I'll have replaced everything on this car).

ALDA problem: I took it back off and checked that the original shim washer was still there - it was. So I looked at my other car - it's ALDA was turned in a different direction, slightly, than my trouble engine. So when I reattached it I oriented the nipple in the same direction (slightly towards the rear of the car instead of slightly towards the front). Took it for a ride - no difference. Clearly, more work to be done here. Am going to read up on how to put together a turbo boost gauge so I can see what is happening (or not happening).

Stay tuned !

Shut off works on vacuum. No vacuum or vacuum leak = no shutoff.

I've managed to eliminate about 90% of the vacuum hoses under the hood of my 87. Its a good thing.

Eliminate 90% of the vacuum lines? Can you tell a little more? Does everything still work that should?

The alda controls fueling, not boost. If your turbo isn't coming on, there's another issue.

What I would suggest is to test each of your switchover valves.

+1

Check the overboost solenoid, on the firewall next to the washer tank.

There should be a hose going over to that from the manifold, if that hose is leaking or fell off then you have no boost. Or if you have the hose plugged into the wrong port on the valve.

I had an issue after cleaning out the intake manifold which caused the over-boost sensor to stick close (grounding the solenoid). This prevented the extra fuel delivery needed to run the turbo at boost pressure.

Try disconnecting the wire to the over-boost sensor and running it that way. Check the sensor for a closed ground connection (normally open absent over-pressure limit).

Alternatively, just by-pass the vacuum line around the solenoid.

Answer to that is a NO DOUBT ABOUT IT YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

Depending on the regulations in your state, you could eliminate the egr system and along with it a good portion of the vacuum business going on under the hood. This will lessen the headaches re: vacuum in the long run. Fewer points of failure. I say do it, you'll thank yourself.

Search for informative and lengthy threads by members "gsxr" and "bcarlton" (many others exist, but these come to mind) with respect to topics of egr/performance/shifting and in there somewheres you will find the answer to getting your ideal setup.

BIG HINT - If you don't already own a MityVac or similar, GET ONE. That's an order

Hey JBrian. I recently replaced ALL the vacuum lines on a 1987 300D so a family member could sell it and it would be 100% for sale. I now have to do the same work on Miska my new-to-me 1987 300D. After doing this process a thousand times I am going to eliminate the vacuum lines on my personal car. If you're interested I have all these hoses I was going to use, but I would sell at a fair price if you need any for your 603s.

Nope. If you were talking to me Jooseppi, I was talking to jbrianfoto. Just abbreviated his name because I was too lazy with no sleep these last 48 hours.

Yes, specifically the thread that's eleventy-billion pages in length on adjusting the transmission. It covers all number of important topics, most applicable to OP would be getting the vacuum system in order and in doing so eliminating the egr components if he so chose.

I tried, more like failed, to quick search for that and other specific threads to add to the post above, but alas, I was defeated. Or reterded. Or both. Dunt matter, the threads are there. Happy digging.
