Good OM617 Engine in Danger of being Scrapped! Albany NY

Hello Everyone,

I've suffered an unfortunate turn of events lately. I was pulling out onto the freeway today when I noticed my temperature gauge began to rise beyond the standard range. Luckily I caught this at its onset, so the engine did not overheat. Upon surveying the car I realized my coolant was leaking. The only logical explanation is that my water pump has failed. This, however, is the end of the line for my car.

As much as I love my 1982 300 SD, I can no longer justify spending money on it. It needs to go. This is where all of you good folks come in.

I do NOT want this beauty to end up getting scrapped. The interior is gorgeous black leather and the dash is virtually crack free (one tiny sliver on the far left just where the wind shield meets the stereo). The wood paneling is in prime condition as well with only a few tiny cracks in the veneer. The body has minimal damage to the front passenger side fender. Other than that, she has sturdy guts.

At the moment the car is sitting in someone's tow yard. I am debating weather or not to take the measly 8 cents per pound they are offering or choose a different course of action.

The upholstery alone is worth at least $350. It looks much like this Mercedes W126 Black Leather Seat Skin Padding 300SD 500SE 420SEL 560SEL | eBay

I am very sorry I was not able to take any pictures of the car. My current location is Albany NY. Is there someone in the area who can salvage this vehicle? It would be worth at least $1,500 if you parted out everything (perfect working ac condenser, radiator, engine, etc..)

Every day she sits there is another $25 down the drain for "storage" fees, so I need to make a decision fast

Please someone tell me if they can work this out.

Well my friend, you are between a rock and a hard place.
It;s mid winter, cold as heck and blizzards everywhere and you are living in blizzard alley. I would say there are only two moves that make sense. Most sensible if the car is as good as you say would be to get the car out of impound now and have a tow truck tow it home and put that new waterpump on it. I think the waterpump is a little over a hundred bucks, then drive it or park it and put it for sale. It just costs to much to rent a trailer or dolly to pick up a dead one and haul really anywhere, especially in this weather. Second option, sell for the $0.08 per pound as offered.

I'm afraid you may be correct. If anything, I want to save the seats. These are nice seats. om617 engine parts can always be found, but good interior is rare.

I'm not in the market, but where are you located, and what, realistically, do you want for the car?

EDIT - I missed the part where you said you were in Albany.

Junqueyardjim gives good advice. Wish I had the room for another vehicle.

#1-tow it home, that's what $100? Free if you have AAA.

I wouldn't scrap a car that's in half decent shape over a minor repair.

Could be a thermostat failure(what, $20?)

I live in Albany NY. I would ask $700 for the vehicle. It is worth more than that if parted out

this is very sad to hear, as this was my old car. i really don't like the thought of it getting scrapped. i know this isn't a craigslist add but i would like to let a possible buyer some of the things that the car has going for it: new mercedes R4 with very cold a/c, new bilstein shocks, euro lights, great black interior with 2nd gen black seats, and good trans. the owner i bought it from did a lot of things the car didn't really need too. rebuilt injection pump and injectors, and i believe had the trans rebuilt. the paint on the driver's side was in rough shape from the previous owner. i know since Jnormous bought it from me, he has rebuilt the front suspension. it would be a shame to let the car be scrapped though...

The first post is a little lacking in detail of the diagnostics. Are you sure it's the water pump? If it is the water pump why not just replace it?

I would fix it. Alternatively, let someone bond it out, go get it, and pay you scrap value. Then you won't have to mess with it.

Again, a thermostat, radiator or H2O pump should fix it. Those are not difficult or expensive to install. That said, the car will be expensive to keep running if you can't wrench or don't have a place.
