Glow plugs-Bosch or Beru?

Been looking around the site and can't find a preference. Is there a better glow plug? They're going in my 1990 2.5 602.962 Bosch or Beru?

I say buy the Bosch Glow Plugs and use the Money saved to buy a Glow Plug Reamer (or something else to clean the Glow Plug Holes) and get some Never-seize type compound to put on the Threads of the Glow Plugs.

From what I have read on Bosch Pencil Type Glow Plugs they are entirely acceptable, easier to find and cheaper to buy.
The Beru Plugs are harder to find, cost more but seem to last slightly longer.

Unfortunately Engine related stuff concerning what goes on inside of the Pre-combustion Chamber during ignition of the Fuel effects the life of Glow Plugs; sort of how well tuned the Engine is.

I just wanted to make sure there were no tip falling off in the cylinder stuff with one brand or another. On my Ford IDI Beru's are the best to run, and they are not that expensive, like $9.00 the last time I bought them. The dealer wants $52 a piece for the MB! Crazy. The Beru's are 'round $25, and I can get Bosch for $14 a piece. How much are the reamer's going for?

I have not read of any Bosch or Beru Glow Plug tips falling into the Pre-combustion Chamber.

I have read of them getting trapped by Carbon and the Tip staying in the Cylinder Head when the rest of the Glow Plug comes out.

But, that is secondary to whatever the issue is that is allowing the Carbon buildup. It does not seem to be an issue with the Glow Plugs themselves.

I had a bad experience with 2 Autolite Glow Plug tips swelling and being difficult to get out but I have not read of anyone ever trying them on 1986 or older Engines. So I think the word that they are no good has pretty well spread enough that no one within the last several Years had said the bought any.

I bought the Autolites before I read on this Forum they were no good.
Some People who have had the Autolites have had the tips burst.

You can get 5 bosch GPs for the OM602 on ebay for around $45. I got my reamer for around $35 on sale, usually around $45 from a another site I can't mention but has a youtube channel if you want to try to find it. I'd be willing to let you rent mine just PM me.

We put 5 Bosch duratherms in last week for $14.21ea. 85 300TD started this morning to try and boost the gas 420 sel that would'nt start. It was -37 celsius, which is -34 farenheit, this a.m.....with windchill it was -47celcius, which is -52.6 farenheit. It took only one glow cycle and about 3 seconds of cranking and she was running on all 5, with some help from me on the throttle. I am impressed with these, as I really did not expect this thing to start at these temps.

Part number for them is both Bosch 80006 and 0250201039. The 80006 seem to be exactly the same but are much cheaper

Anyone try NGK? I've seen them around at premium prices...wondering if they are worth the money.

FWIW, I installed a set of autolites last year. I didn't like the way they looked, and it's on my list to replace them this spring.

That 020 ...number looks like the one that came on my durotherms, which could explain the price difference....I'm still trying to figure out how we got durotherms for so cheap. It is -49celcius out there right now. Fffffrickin cold. Got the cord fixedd on the 420sel and started it, got it going with a chemical reaction of alcohol and gas down the throttlle body.

I'll go check that number. I needed to buy new glow plugs for the diesel cause I had exhausted all the used ones I could find around here. I have''nt bought a glow plug since we bought the diesels which is about 8years or so. Most of the ones we pulled out were bosch's I had 1beru and 2 champpions, I seem to remember the guy pricing me out many selections....

Autolites, Champion, Bosch, Beru, AC\Delco,(they were really expensive), N..G.K(also expensive) Beru's were about ten bucks more per plug, than the Bosch's. The A\C Delco and N.G.K WERE OVER 50 bucks per plug???? Autolites were 11 bucks ea. But stay away from those. The 2 champions we removed were good and looked really old....I think they were 16 bucks ea.

thanks for the reply's. Think I'll try the bosch gp's. Just curious, how do you deal with cold like that? How long does that go on for up there in Canada? We've been having one of the coldest winters I can remember here in NJ, but nothing close to that. The older I get, the more I HATE the cold!

They are the same, but different quantities...you save 6 bucks buying in bulk

Should say it seems like they are the same.

Yes, it sucks...we were not expecting it to be this cold for so long either. I hate it too. I guess you have to plan ahead to avoid having to start cars, Had no choice, this a.m we had to go to ball hockey....did'nt make it. Could have took the diesel, but the Heat is'nt working...another thread. This site helps in the cold, lots of tricks from the guys on here. Main one is to have working glow plugs, as we are finding out....we are on our way.

Chatting with fellow enthusiasts in similar predicaments helps one to keep their sanity....something about knowing you are not the only one, is comforting.
