Just sent you a PM too, Rollguy. This is very nice! I have a cracked turbo flex pipe to replace and found this tread, so it's a perfect chance to change them both out. Also, since the trap oxidizer is being removed, so is the connecting flex pipe too? And it will be covered on the other end? The reason I'm asking this is because I just changed that pipe out last week after spending $240 on that pipe! But I feel in the long run, having the bypass pipe is a better choice. I've attached a picture of the new pipe I just installed to confirm if that will be removed or not. Thanks!

Yes the EGR pipe gets removed, and a block-off disc is clamped in it's place.

1985 Mercedes Trap Bypass Pipe

Hello Everyone,

I have a 1985 CA 300TD with the oxidation catalyst recall upgrade. The EGR pipe broke a few months ago. After some research I decided to plug the oxidation catalyst's opening for the EGR pipe. The EGR valve appears to be in the closed position and responds to vacuum test properly, so I just plugged the vacuum line and left it in place.

Now there are 2 different kinds of noise. The first one is a high-pitch whistle-like sound that happens only during acceleration above certain RPM, and it happens whether or not the car is moving.

The 2nd sound did not start right after I plugged the catalyst, but weeks later. It could be related but I can't be sure. It is a low-pitch rattling sound that happens only when the car is moving. It feels like something is choking.

Further research has led me to this bypass pipe idea, which I hope can solve these problems. I am therefore checking with you experienced folks for some words of wisdom.

QUESTIONS:
- Is there anything I should know before I proceed with the bypass pipe?
- Where can I get the bypass pipe?

Thank you in advance.

:)

bypass pipe

I have an 85 300sd and was researching possible fixes for my trap and the connection to the manifold. I ended up welding the trap to the piece that had broken off - but twisted the connector during the weld - no fit - weld again - no fit - cut then weed again - fits with a little help from a Mercedes sledge hammer. Now the car sound worse than before with all the welding. Your bypass idea is what I was thinking next, so how to get one? Or should I try with the dealers in San Diego to get in on the recall? I'm lost and burnt, if you can please advise.

Now what?

Roll guy,
I recently went through three days trying to fix my trap which was separated from the connection to the exhaust. Thought to weld, not good didn't fit, weld again, just off. Then I cut the trap and welded last time. it fit but only after using the Mercedes sledge hammer. Now I discover your bypass pipe. Do I take the car to the dealers for the recall, or do I get the bypass from you - how does one order such a thing? I don;t know if the car already went through the recall. I entered my vin and they told me to call. So I'm lost with a gurgling exhaust that sounds horrible, and is embarrassing. Please advise...

If you did any work on the trap, they will not honor any warranty, regardless if it has not been done yet. I guess you are stuck either replacing it with a used trap, or buying a pipe from me. I have a good used trap-ox if you think your car may be under warranty. However, it is a lot of labor to keep taking off and putting on the trap, so you might as well just do it one last time with the bypass pipe. Just my opinion though.....Rich
