Anyone brave?

Olds Regel 98 /Diesel -rare

Buick regal w/ GM Diesel. In a perverse fashion, I am almost game. It's probably under a new layer of cold cold lake effect snow.

Eh? It's an Olds 98 Royale with the infamous GM V8 diesel.

The Lincoln coupes had the BMW turbodiesel.

the problem with that motor wasn't the head gasket, as much as the head bolts... GM just could NOT get a set of bolts to hold down the pressure... I bet ARP has a set that will hold with today's tech... I had two of those back in the day I bought a third one, but the motor was seized, so I scrapped it... they actually got 30mpg... never saw one with leather interior before... not bad...

As I recall they were excellent cars in terms of solidity and reliability. My friend had one and he claimed it was the last car where Oldsmobile actually had real engineering input to 'their' version of the corporate chassis.

Studs would probably be a good idea.

Imagine that car with a 617 turbo.

I'd get an old Caddy Bentley style body and put the five-cylinder in it, that would be sweet!

It would be the same HP as the LF9 diesel engine. Considering the gas engines of the day, the diesel was not a bad option. The problem was the GM philosophy at the time of making things "just good enough", which many times was not quite good enough. Later versions had Lucas return-less injectors and ran much cleaner, but I think the HP was reduced from 125 to about 105. They also seemed to stay together a little better.

If it were me and the project bug bit (body was good enough), id buy it, remove the problematic crappy diesel which is only ever going to be just ok, and swap in a late generation 6.5 and transmission from a Chevy truck, and enjoy.

I looked at one of these a while back that popped up on craigslist. The size of the vehicle was amazing, miles of sheet metal. Unfortunately while the body on the one I looked at was fair, the interior was rotted out and was providing residences for an apartment complex full of critters.

Thats where Id start if I looked at it, id go through the interior with a fine tooth comb to make sure no rodents were in there.

The Olds diesel blocks were just fine, they used big block ( 400 425 455 ) main bearing sizes. Drag racers look for these " X " blocks to build high HP motors.

Even more rare is the V6 version in front and rear drive cars.
