picking up my new 190d in ephrata pa

I'm heading to Ephrata Pa to Hubers Auto to inspect and presumably purchase a 190d they have on the lot there. I have a deposit on the car.

Train to NYC, then to Lancaster, and then drive home via WIlkes Barre to RT 84/ RT 87 on Saturday

Heres hoping I make it!

First night out.

Picked up the car at 2:00 and drove for three hours. This has 81,500 miles on it at purchase.

The body is highly detailed, and I am happy with the condition. There is zero corrosion, one small parking ding, and nothing more to report. I dont have to tell anyone from the rust belt what that is worth. It has both underpans still.

Original tool kit, complete and unused, stud finder, etc. THe spare was wrapped in newspapers from the local paper dated 1984.

In the last five years its had 10,000 miles, and has always been garage kept since new. There is no wear on the cruise control stalk. 85deg C the whole day, and 2 bar oil pressure at idle.

THe bad: The seat sags on the outside. Cruise control engages, but disengages after a few minutes. Heater is always on. even though the ccu was replaced.

The two big baddies: it wallows like a Caddy. Tracks perfectly, but feels like a shopping cart to park. It has mongrel tires mistatched front to rear but in the end I suspect Bilstiens are in order. I havent had a car that waddled like this since my 1957 Plymouth Savoy.

And it thumps on shutdown. I;ve read about that on the forum, is that motor mount related perhaps?

Tomorrow I finish my journey and will post pictures.. I cant wait to tear into it.

Can only offer 2 pieces of info.

1) do not use the spare. It is too old and done for even thought it looks pristine.
2) Get a 199x 190E cruise amp. It will work in the 190D. It is under the passenger side carpet.

Sounds like a good find.

Home at last. The first 100 miles I took it easy but this morning I flogged it as hard as it would go for 8 hours straight, and it performed well. There are some long hills to climb after Rutland, and it didn't heat under the strain. It needs a lot of sorting out, but it has good bones.

I'll work on a few pictures.

Engine shocks, not mounts. Is there light vibration at idle, too?

Glad to hear the trip went well! Ephrata is my hometown, seems like there is a big German car following there, especially w/ VWs and Audis.

Welcome to the 190D club! I suspect that is a 190d 2.2 if its a 1984? 72 Horsepower!

Mine is a rare and unique 1993 190d 2.2 auto. with a 2.85:1 diff S-l-o-w but 30mpg!

You must have seen this car before. Its bright yellow and has been in Lancaster area since new. I got it from Huber Auto, who seem like a decent bunch. They pointed out a MacDonalds on the way that was where the last owner spent his mornings. He sounded like a gearhead from way back, which is perfect.

This is my third 190d, so welcomes are unnecessary but thanks! Neither of the first two made it home to Vermont under their own power, so I was pretty glad to be driving up the driveway in this one-- it makes it a little easier to explain to the wife if it actually runs!

early 190s dont have shocks. I inspected the passenger side mount-- it has a big chunk out of it. The drivers side usually goes first since it gets soaked with fuel, so it's probably due as well. And no, it does not idle smoothly.
