signs/symptoms alternator is about to die?

The battery light started going on and off dimming but never stayed on and all the sudden the driver seat started moving back a tiny bit at a time, and the heater stopped, then poof no lights no heater no nothing, mind you I'm driving thru southern Colorado at 9 pm last night. So I turned around and was able to park it. Is this normal?

Make, model, year?

Sounds like it stopped charging and you ran the battery down, or you have a bad connection. If you have no lights at all, it might just be an open ground or loose connection to the battery.

Check battery & alternator @ parts store or starter & alternator shop.

Generically, verify belt tension, check the battery & connections.
Fully charged battery about 12.65 V, not useful to start about 12.25V.

May need new alternator brushes. On a 300SDL they can be changed with the alternator in place if the belly pan is off.

My apologies I don't know why my car signature failed to show up. 84 300 sd and non of the fuses blew, ground is excellent via double zero gauge ground. No voltage drops noted YET. My major reason for the post is as others have posted when they have the alternator tested its ok but actually its bad.

The first symptom of the alternator going may be a dim 'Battery' light or it is going on/off. It happened to my 190D with a very dim battery light one night. I removed the regulator and found the carbon brush were badly worn, bearly touching the armature of the alternator. Replaced the regulator for $10 and now all is well. The regulator can be removed with the alternator in situ, if the 2 bollts holding it can be removed easily. It is not the case in my 190D though.

The other issue could be mechnical with worn bearing. You probably will here noises if it happens.
