Are all flywheel bolts alike?

Hey guys,

I'm looking to buy flywheel bolts to finish my OM617 swap, and was wondering if the flywheel bolts for the W123 chassis are the same? AutohasAZ lists them as being for the automatic transmission, but I have the manual.

Also, who has the quickest shipping? I know Pelican is really quick, but their FW bolts are $9/pop.

Any other advice?

Thanks,
Josh

I think so, but I'd compare part #s on Pelican to make sure.

Auto and manual are different, and you can reuse them if they are within spec. They're expensive all right.

manual flywheel needs manual flywheel specific bolts. You can't go back and forth, the auto flywheel bolts are stretch bolts and quite a bit longer with a lower profile tool surface, vs the manual flywheel bolts are regular bolts and threaded all the way, with a much deeper tool surface and shorter threaded surface. The automatic flywheel is a lot thicker in this specific area then either the 28 or 38lb manual flywheels are.

If you use auto flywheel bolts on a manual flywheel, you will end up hitting the oil pan with the end of the bolt before its tight

Glad I made this post. Almost bought the auto ones Would you happen to know what in spec would be?

I also cant seem to find the manual bolts anywhere. Nor does it really specifiy for auto or manual. Darned expensive bolts.

You might call ARP (Google them). They make tough aircraft-quality bolts for all kinds of things. Chances are good that they have provided these to previous projects and will know the dimensions. Their stuff is well beyond Grade 8 (whatever that is in metric) and will NEVER fail.

Worth a try

Well the one place you mentioned does list flywheel bolts under engine parts for $7.56. Anyway, if money is real tight I would suggest you buy just one and find someone who has a micrometer to tell you how much yours have streched. You could probably find the "use" or "do not use" length also in the factory service manual. I think even the Haynes Manual might list how much "strech" is permissible.

I am wrong -- how shocking.

@Dan Stokes -- the metric bolt grades are 8.8, 10.9, and 12.9.

Automatic trans FW bolts are totally different than the bolts for the manual transmission. will not work.

They are a torque to yield bolt, one time use, unless you want to chance it.

The Part# is 615-032-05-71. Stahl Motors in Monterey, Ca. has them for $4.80 ea. Dealer list is $6.00.

Mercedes Benz SCREW - 6150320571

Price has come down, I bought some and they were $7.24 retail and $5.80 wholesale about 6 - 7 months ago.

I just saw some on E-Bay for $12.95 ea. and Amazon has them for $9.42.

I didn`t see them listed on pelican.

I needed them by tomorrow, luckily my mechanic (Ernie's Mercedes Service, really really good in Sac if you can get through his assistant) was able to look them up and get them for me for $6/pop. Which isnt too bad, and they're going to be here tomorrow. I even entered my credit card info to buy the auto ones on Pelican. I'm trying to finish my car before spring break is over so I may be able to drive it back to school

Thanks for the help guys! Now I know (any maybe everyone on this forum) knows that the auto ones are different than the standard ones.

Keep that web site I listed handy, fill out the Credit card Info, and you can get the parts Wholesale. You do need the part number.

Thanks guys, my project is most likely going to be another 240D or manual something, so these specs are great. Bookmarked all of these links.
