W123 hood opening problem

Is there supposed to be a spring of some sort (where the latch is) to push the hood up when the latch releases?

The only way I am able to open the hood is if I have a helper pulling up on the hood, or if I prop the handle up with this piece if wood and pull up on it myself.

If you follow the cable to the latch behind the grill, you will see where the cable ends, operating the catch-latch. There are two nuts, at the end of the cable. They are adjustable. Adjusting them one way or another will take some slack out of the pull.

Directly in front of the latch is a spring-loaded plunger that is supposed to raise the hood from its closed position.

please don't adjust the nuts, first go ahead and try to get that spring loaded thing going. It's a little painted pin with a plastic top. To get it going again, soak it in some kind of lubricant, and try tapping it with a hammer. Just slightly, so it moves down a little bit.

Mine rusted in place after I hadn't opened the Hood on my DD for a long time (no engine trouble, yay ), and that is how i got it going again. Hood pops up like a champ now

Edit, well it was on the W124, not the W123, my signature isn't correct anymore

Hmm, my "plunger" might be missing, do you happen to have a picture of it?

I don't think it's the cable because it does release, it just doesn't "pop"

I sprayed the shaft with PB blaster and jiggled it until it could twist a bit but I couldn't get it to come up. I even gripped it with a vise grip and tapped it upwards with a hammer.. maybe it needs more time soaking

If that thing is that rusty, I would just find a replacement and get a new cable....the spring may help it pop....but with that much rust, I am almost positive the metal has been jeopardized....I would be really afraid of the hood popping open on the freeway and take out the windshield, hood, hinges etc...
