W126 ABS -- is it 4-sensor, 4-valve, 4-sensor, 3-valve...?

I was reading up on ABS systems in on Wikipedia and my reading caused me to wonder how many sensors the W126 ABS system has and whether it co trips the rear brakes individually together. Anyone know?

Hmmm I dont think I've ever seen a rear sensor. I think they're only on the front. Not sure about tripping and all that..

On a W124 there is one rear ABS sensor and it is in the diff. I assume W126s and W123s are the same. So jooseppi your theory on the rear ABS should be true.

Interesting. That's one area on these cars I've not really explored.

Most W126s use a 3 channel, 3 valve, 3 sensor system. As noted there is one sensor in the diff for both rear wheels. Look at the brake lines and you'll see there is only one pipe going to the back.

Cars with ASR have a 4 channel, 4 sensor system. There is a sensor on each output of the diff. Model year 1991 only in the USA.

My Audi 5000 had the same system as the W126 (Bosch ABS 2E), and had both rear wheels tied together though each wheel had its own sensor. Like most older VW / Audi products it also had a proportioning valve attached to one of the swing axles that would reduce brake pressure to both rear wheels as the rear lifted, and one that worked on G-Force that would reduce pressure to the passenger side wheel only.

It just occurred to me to check the Russian EPC, and Paul is on the money. The fronts are controlled individually and obviously have their own sensors, and the rear has a sensor in the diff and is controlled as a unit. I assume that this is the same sensor that is used for the ASR.

I wonder what the rear sensor is triggered by?

Aaaand compu85 beat me to it . So the ASR is done differently -- that makes sense, as you'd want to be controlling the rear wheels individually.

There is a trigger wheel in the front of the diff, just like in the backs of your front hubs. Borrowed from stretch's thread. Input shaft in front of the bearing, that should be it.

And, FWIW, the cars with ASD only have 3 ABS sensors

Well ASR works using the ABS, so it would stand to reason that it would have to have a 4 wheel ABS setup. My understanding of ASR, and I believe I am quoting Mercedes literature (dangerous statement lol) here, that ASR "simulates a locking type differential" by applying brake pressure to the spinning wheel, forcing the open diff to transfer power to the stationary wheel. I think that was from ML literature. I could be wrong though. But for that two work you would need a 4 valve pump with 4 sensors to lock the rear wheels independently.

Yes. In addition ASR has a supply pump that can provide pressure to the brakes without having the pedal pushed. ASR is actually two technologies in once: EDL, electronic diff lock, which is what uses the brakes, and ASR which reduces engine torque. In the case of the W126 it uses the cruise control motor to close the throttle.

Cool I did not realize there was an engine aspect to it like on more modern cars. I've never owned a gasser Benz past 1990.
