holy shaking air cleaner batman

on my last order of parts i got some new rubber mounts, everything is now tight and it shakes a lot, i can see how people end up with the broken hanger it bolts to. how much is too much?

I found that the repair that has the most effect on this is a thorough valve adjustment. If it has been a long time since one has been done, then 2-3 adjustments, with 100+ miles between will have an even greater result.

Yes, the air cleaner mount is shaking because your engine is shaking, obviously.

Because of the design of the bracket and mount the air cleaner vibrates much more harshly than the engine itself; it seems like the vibration is actually amplified in to the air cleaner housing.

Here is a video of how little my '85 OM617 shakes at idle. The air cleaner doesn't move (good bracket and brand new mounts) but you can feel it vibrating quite harshly if you put your hand on it.

Now if your engine itself vibrates more than this then your air cleaner will be even worse off. You'll want to make sure you have good engine and tranny mounts, well-adjusted valves, etc. This will lessen the stress on your air cleaner bracket.

You can also do some to help absorb vibration. I think people have stuffed some thick rubber, like maybe some coolant hose, between the mount and in intake mainfold to help reduce vibration.

truly i don't know why i haven't adjusted the valves yet especially considering all the other things i have done. I think i am hung up with not having the bent wrenches to do the adjustment an i am sure the PO didn't have them done for quite a while.

It's not a bad job, really.

The hard part isn't the adjustment. It's getting everything off and on to get access. On my '85 I found it easiest to remove the air cleaner housing, undo a number of linkages, and remove two of the three bolts holding the cruise control actuator so it could be rotated out of the way. Honestly my least favorite part is removing and re-installing the fan and clutch for easier turning of the crank bolt to turn the engine by hand.

Have you considered using a ratchet wrench?

It's pretty easy to make your own adjustment wrenches. Just buy 2 from harbor freight, clamp them in a vise and take a blow torch to them. Makes it very easy to bend them...

I use a momentary switch, connected as in the pic. Comes in very handy to turn the engine over. Helps with adjusting valves, lining up the torque converter, etc.

Somewhere in Our DIY section you takes a 6 or so inch section of Heater Hose and put it between the Air Cleaner housing and the Intake Manifold I did that and it keeps the Housing from beating on the Intake Manifold.
I can't remember the ID Hose I used but I glued it to the Intake Manifold.

If you have some regular Open End or Combination Wrenches that you can thin the Heads to 1/4" thick on; you can use them to adjust the Valves. However, you need to remove the Fuel Injection Hard Lines or it is difficult to use the regular Wrenches.

If the Fuel Injection Hard Lines are removed when you re-install them don't tighten the Fuel Injection Hard Line Nuts at the Injectors. You need to crank the Engine till the Air is bled out before you Tighten those Nuts or you are going to have a hard time starting.
(If you are ever on the Road and run completely out of Fuel you need to know how to bleed the Air out as described otherwise you are going to Kill your Battery trying to get the Engine to start and it is also hard on the Starter.)

A Valve Adjustment and rebuilding the Injectors with New Nozzles took away the Bulk of Shaking on Mine.
After that it was chenging the Motor and Transmission Monts and a new Rack Dampner/Governor Idle Screw/Pin.

Phoenix=Lemförder/Lemfoerder/Lemforder= the same as the Mercedes Dealer Motor Mounts. All are made in Turkey. The Motor Mounts from the Mercedes Dealer are like $150+each.

I checked harbor freight and they only sell complete sets.... i wonder how they work their lifetime warranty think they break open a set and trade you the one you need or you have to return the whole set for a new one?

I checked home depot, and they are cheap enough but they are all small stubby lengths, i have some crows feet think they would work? but don't know that i want to grind them thin..... EBAY!!!!

How About AutoZone or Oreilley Auto Parts (formally Kragens Auto Parts)?
I can't remember if it was still Kragens or had changed to Oreilley Auto Parts but I bought a single 9/16" wrench from them (Powerbuilt). They have a website you can check the prices on.

The problem with buying single Wrenches on ebay is the shipping cost would be too much. Do they have Yard Sales or a SwapMeet(Flea Markets) in Your area?

Some where in the DIY section there is some measurements and angles to make the Wrenches.

Having the bent wrenches sure make the job easier. I got my set off E-bay with a few other MB tools for $58 a few years ago. sometimes they go cheap, but usually they get bid out of sight.

Here is some Google images of wrenches to give you an idea.
