clacks at low RPM

1993 MB 2.5L

this is what I've done so far:

Turbo was inop, repaired vac lines and disconnected EGR cans, turbo works now and the Tranny shifts normally now

Rough Idle, replaced fuel, fuel filters and injectors, the idle smoothed out and acceleration improved.

I continue to have a low RPM clacking that sounds like its coming from the head. It decreases when you increase rpm and disappears.

What's next? I'm going nuts on this thing.

Hi Drago!
My 240D does the same thing. In the summer, when its really hot and I let it idle slow, the oil pressure drops enough that the timing chain tensioner loosens enough to make a clacking sound. I think that is what is happening on your car. I just run heavier oil in the summer, and idle a little higher (850-900 RPM). If you have an awfulmatic, try taking it out of gear at the stoplights.

You might try replacing the timing chain tensioner and make sure your engine has good oil pressure.
Cheers!
Chris

it does it all the time and it's still cool here in VA, can I get to the tensioner fairly easy or do I have to pull the engine or head? Oil pressure is on "3" what ever that means

The damn thing is now for sale, I changed the oil and the clacking got worse. I suspect the person who sold it to me loaded it up with heavier oil to dampen the noise. I hope the SOB who sold it to me gets hit by a truck

Could you post a video? Sounds like a piston or a rocker arm or something like that.
