BACKFIRE from my newest 190D 2.5T
any clue what would cause a diesel to backfire?
the motor starts instantly, gives a little black smoke on startup, then a little blue haze for a few seconds, then drives like a top... but it BACKFIRES when cold. leaking injector? burned valve? timing? any clue?

Backfire means that you have unburned fuel in the exhaust. Possibles:
1) A cylinder not hot enough to fire, due to a bad or carbon'd glow plug 2) Weak compression in one cylinder 3) Bad injector 4) Timing problem of some sort 5) Leaky valve seat If the problem goes away when warm, then weak compression or a bad glow plug seem to be the likely suspects...check your compression. |
