head's off!!

Finally, i started the project and have the head off....everything ready to go back in place....except, little guide sleeves for the rocker assemblies...the dealer may have them today (Sat.) otherwise i need to wait till Tues.!!!!

I started the job on Thursday....my goal was to immediately pull the prechambers to inspect them so if i needed a new one I could order Thurs and probably have by Fri. I was in such a hurry to remove them that I pulled the first prechember out BEFORE I REMOVED THE GLOW PLUG!!!!!!! No wonder it was a little difficult....it sheared the tip of the glow plug right off with almost no damage to the prechamber. After that I slowed down and took my time.

So far so good.

Mark

Pre-Chambers

How do you remove the pre-chambers? Can it be done with the head still fitted to the engine? Is there a special tool? some form of slide hammer? Im working with the 5 pot 617 engine.

Yes, there is a special tool -- it screws into the prechamber and has a fitting to unscrew the lock ring.

Beg, borrow, or steal one -- it is very difficult to remove the prechambers without it. Never, never, ever, pound on the part the sticks out of the bottom of the head -- if you swage it out, it will be impossible to remove!

I think there are two tools , one to unlock the lock ring... and then one to pull the precombustion chamber... ( two styles of this are available..... one screwing in and using a slide hammer to force it out.... the other a combination of screws and threads which pulls it out ) ...

Those guide sleeves... are those the ones which protect the valve stem seals when they are being installed ? Greg
