Door Check Bad News

The back passenger door check on my '85 300TD has been talking back to me a little lately. Wanting to avoid having the door jam in the open position, which can happen, I decided to order a replacement. Bad news, NLA. Anyone have a good used one to sell?
Thanks!

Shane

The rear ones don't usually go. Drivers front most common. Maybe take it out, clean and grease? Also make sure that the door check is not loose. Sometimes the tabs break off inside the door. Also check that the door pillar hinge part is not loose. Some here have screwed or riveted the hinge because it was loose.

I was able to buy a front door check for my 85 300D. Not from dealer, but NOS from a parts place in Toronto.

Hmmm......I'm not sure where you checked?

I found multiple sites that still carry these.

He needs rear. Front and rear are not the same.

Even Mercedes OE rears were NLA last time I checked.

Majority of sites I checked recently only carried URO front ones (some say APA but APA = URO).

mine has been making a ton of noise too, do they really freeze up in the open position?

I was just ignoring it, but its volume is no longer easy to ignore as it snaps around.

Any good procedures on replacing this, or is it something straight forward and obvious?

Yes, they can jam in the open position, but when it happened to me it was on a car that had sat outside unused for four years and it didn't much like it when I opened the door either.

Based on my experience of them as they start to stick, you will have a decent amount of warning before it gets that bad.

There is nothing special about the job, but it takes some fiddling to get it lined up inside the door to bolt it up (on the front). I have never done a rear one.

I need to get a front door one then ASAP. The noise from mine is loud, like someone slapping the hood of the car, plus the door is clunky to close. Its been doing this for at least a year, so im going to look quite the fool with that level of warning and letting it jam open.

I'm curious, but haven't checked -maybe I will next time I have the door panels off on one of mine. I wonder if the only difference between front and rear is the number of stops along the travel. I understand that the original straps up front had two stops, halfway and full open, while the rear just had full open.

If the straps share the same bolt pattern and length I'd assume you could install front straps on the rear doors and you could call it an "upgrade" since you now have two stops on the rears too!

The rears are slightly shorter than the fronts (they are apparently the same as the ones used in the Coupe).

If I get a chance tonight I will take pics. I have two Coupe ones as spares (about to be sold to the guy who bought my Coupe).

Are the internals shorter, or is the strap the extends out of the door shorter? If the internal part is shorter that shouldn't really matter as long as a longer front one doesn't interfere with the window rail or regulator movement. It's the "strap" and how it bolts to the door that would matter more.

Looks like something to start collecting from the yards.

At least with this part we can always go wrangler style if they cant be found. Weld a few hooks and make a nylon strap

The "body" is smaller, didn't look at the strap.

It's just something I happened to recently notice as I was sorting parts, I did not think on it at the time....
