I may have scored at the junk yard.

I noticed this morning at 5 that the local junk yard newly listed an 83 240d. I needed some parts, and Mercedes, especially diesels, do not show up much around here. I got there before opening time, and there were already 5 guys ahead of me. Fortunately, none headed for the 240.

I took off the cap on the valve cover and felt the two lobes of the cam I could reach. There were no flat spots. Cam felt smooth. The glow plugs were clean although the engine was oily. Apparently new glow plugs. I looked for, but did not find holes in the sides of the block. The car did not look that bad, and looked much better than some I have seen on Craigslist. Still wondering why it was there, until I looked under the car. No bushing in one of the shift levers on the manual tranny. I doubt it shifted well, if at all. I suspect this was the primary reason the car was in the junk yard. What a shame, as it really was in pretty good shape. I had trouble finding any rust.

One of the motor mounts had collapsed. I found a bungee cord running under the engine to support it. No joke! There was still clean diesel visible in the filter. The seats were even still fairly firm, and the interior was in pretty good shape.

I ended up pulling the long block and tranny. My 2.4 engine has no compression on one cylinder, and this looks like it may be a good shoe in. Same year even (83). 212k mileage on the odometer. Hope the engine meets my expectations!

W.

Good score, these 123`s are becoming very rare in the yards.

Which yard is this in? I`ll be in the Portland area end of April first week of may.
maybe I can snag a few 240 parts.

Sounds like the maintenance has been neglected, and it was junked.

Dec 31 a 240 came in the yards down here, fairly clean, 4-spd and around 240K miles. crack free dash and good dark brown interior. 2 weeks later on the day of the 50% sale, it was pulled and crushed.
You better get what you can when you see them.

I wasn't to knowledgeable in the w123 field, on my euro I thought I was going to need a new clutch as I felt a slipping in one of the gears and a grinding occasionally....just as I got it back a few months ago, I was under the rear checking things out and noticed a bushing gone and another on its way.....so moral of my story, you can be missing the bushings and the transmission will still shift......just may have a few issues...

In the yards in NorCal, there are at least 1 or 2 W123's in the yards within 100 miles (including that euro wagon from a month ago). A month before that I found a banana yellow 300TD wagon that I pulled a radiator from.

Good find on that 240D! We hardly get any 240D's (especially with manuals) in the yards though.

Hey Walter, This summer I was at Pick 'N Pull Portland South quite a bit and I saw a few 240's dissappear... bummer... I went to look at a 300 that had arrived a couple of days ago an NO engine drivetrain, nuthin! It sure would be fun to put a 240 in a Samurai...

(It looked like maybe it was pulled before it got to the yard, the front clip was dissected.)

I'm surprised that my M-Bs got to Portland (I pulled the engine and trans out of a 300SD to get the engine for the S-10 and the engine/trans from a decent 240D to get the 4 speed for the truck). (Probably not really mine).

Charlie,

I am east of the Cascades and not close to Portland. I have not perused any of the Portland yards, but suspect you would have a better chance of finding MB parts around Portland than most of the rest of the Northwet.

What parts would you recommend to be picked up as spares? I grabbed the glow plug relay, the clutch petal, and the headlights, which I think are some sort of aftermarket euro style. The lights look brand new, like the car was not driven much after the lights were put in. Other than the glow plug relay, I am not sure what other spares I should be getting?

I picked up filters and will try to get around to testing the motor this week. I'd like to have an idea what shape it is in before I go to the trouble to install it.

Regards,

W.

East of the Cascades, then you are in the dryer part of Oregon?
My Daughter has lived there so long she has moss growing on her north side.

We will be heading to Portland may 1st and be there for a week and half or so. I`ll be hitting the three around Portland and the one in Vancouver.

You ought to grab the Door Checks for sure and the vac door actuators for spares, but cheaper to buy a whole door for $60 than peace meal one. then you have glass, regulators etc....

How is the dash? crack free? Blower motor, blower switch and maybe the 2 switch`s for the heat temp. might be cheaper to pull the whole AC heater box, think they are $60. then you get all the parts.

How are the seats? check the rear seat back, usually the horse hair gets all crumbly, if it is a good solid one, grab it. they are around $20.

How are the Visors. Getting harder to find good one`s.

Check the Brake Booster, if it isn`t all rusty from Brake Fluid leaking and looks new, good to have for a spare. they are about $24. plus tax etc...
Most are not in too good looking shape, but I have pulled three that looked new. sent one back east to a guy and one for my buddy that is dragging his feet to slow his 240. don`t know why he won`t come for it. and one as a spare for my 3 123`s

Check the rear Axles, I have actually pulled several that were new, and a set of new Flex Disks off an old 240 in the Portland area.

How about the tail lights and the 2 for the license plate.

Just some ideas of what to look for. can`t have too many parts if you are going to have these old MB`s for the long haul. A lot of parts are becoming NLA.

I like your reference to the "Northwet".
