Glow Plug Relay? Anyone have one I could look at?

Hi Everyone,

I've got a customer here with an 001 545 78 32 part number glow plug relay.

Looks like this guy:
001 545 78 32 - Glow Plug Relay - Imgur

Long story short, the car's battery got installed backwards by a previous owner. I've got a box of goodies that my customer would like me to repair.

Parts of the glow plug relay got toasty and I can't tell what the original components were to attempt replacement.

I was hoping that someone out there would have a spare relay that I might be able to borrow and examine.

Hopefully someone out there can help!

Thanks Guys!

-Kris

That is the oddball expensive relay $681.60. They are not common.
Pelican has it for $707.

You customer needs to consider doing what is needed to convert to the more Common Glow Plug Relay.

I agree with you 100%.

The more I look at the board the less likely a rebuild seems possible. Its from a 1980 300D..

I would like to help him move to a better and cheaper relay...I'm not sure what would be required. Certainly some wiring changes at the harnesses...but I dont think its impossible or overly difficult.

The other glow plug relays I have are the ones that lived under the car's dashboard.

Maybe ? I'm not sure. I've only known of the existence..never know what components/items were used or what they looked like..

I wonder if the fast glow relay would work for you. Bosch part number 0250201953
Supposed to work with the new style glow plugs to start the engine in 3-5 seconds (instead of 8 I think) and I believe it comes with 4 of those glow plugs. It's like $140 on ebay Bosch 0250201953 Fast Glow Kit | eBay

OMG, I returned that relay a month ago to the
scrap yard for credit toward other junk.
I had pulled from a 1980 300d.(see edit)
I had no need for it to begin with since I was looking for another type.
Bought it for the heck of it and later returned it. DOH.
I think diesel giant sells a manual button type set up that over rides the need for a relay.
Its like $50 plus any plug upgrades.

Bummer on that relay !

EDIT, the relay I returned was actually from a 1981 300D. Manufacturer Part Number:
001 545 98 32

Looks similar the one sought but it is a 9 pin not eleven pin. Looks like your customer's 1980 300D has a chassis number lower than chassis # 21143.

anyway, diesel %%%% giant and mercdes****source have the relay eliminator kit. the latter for sure
Fits the Following: Please read carefully. All Turbo 116 and 126 300SD 1978 to 1985. All 123 240D 300D 300CD 300TD 1980 to 1985. WILL NOT FIT models with series loop style glow plugs up thru 1979.

The epc shows nothing found with that part number.

I have a spare, working unit with the part #001 (I think) 545 98 32.

PM me your address, I'll sent it to you or email me, I have a bunch of pics of the inside.

Thats what I discovered too. EPC had no record of that.

I believe its was the first pencil style plug controller. It has external inputs for sensors and some other bits.

I am going to try to convince my customer to convert to the newer style relay that we all see on the 81+ 300SD/D/etc.

I think the 001 545 98 32 part number IS that newer relay. Correct me if I am wrong?

Here is a thread Shadetree77 wrote up on changing these 3 legged relays to the later style.

Glow plug relay upgrade

My 80 240D has this same type relay. seems they were used only for that year.

Since the 300D already has pencil style glow plugs...

Sounds like all I've got to do is buy some connectors, alter the pin out to match the newer style glow plug relay and install?

Anyone see anything wrong with that?
