No it's time to work on "Spouse" - my other 87 300TDt

Spring is here - weather was nice today, so JJ and I got to working on my next project - Spouse - my wife's 300TDt that we got from my Buddy Quahog up in Rhode Island. Briefly, the engine runs, poorly, makes allot of smoke, but there is no real power now and it does not like to shut off on its own (have to crack open an injector line to kill it).

This afternoon I installed a brand new battery, replaced some parts that I robbed to get Klaus running (he needs help too), and got her running enough to pull into our workshop canopy (out of the sun and rain).

First things first, JJ started vacuuming up all of the mouse poop (car still smells like mouse, but we'll attack that more later). He did a bang up job and earned $3 for his time!

I worked on scraping off the painters tape from around the sunroof. Quahog tried to close the sunroof and it stuck open right at the end, right before a rain - so to keep out the rain, he put tape around it. This has worked great for 6 months. I started to work on that last September, but never got around to it. Now the tape is all dry and nasty. Took about an hour to get it all off, but the work wasn't hard. Once it was done, I started the car and closed the sunroof with no real problems. Dunno - I'm sure it needs a complete cleaning (sunroofs fall into two categories - ones that are stuck open and the ones that will get stuck open).

The engine starts with little effort, but is kinda rough, makes allot of smoke (blue with occasional puffs of black/grey - no white smoke). Here is a short video of how it sounds - I showed how the sop lever bounces up and down. I am going to pull the shutoff valve and make sure it is installed correctly;

I was told that the IP may have been worked on a bit, and that there were some problems with the springs inside some of the chambers. I scored a pair of freshly rebuilt Bosch IP's last winter (basically a buy one get one free deal - can't beat that). Going to put one in this car and the other in Klaus (my other 87 300TDt);

I'll do my best to keep this thread alive until I get this one running in top shape.

Yay, another jbrianfoto 300TD resurrection thread! Getting mouse droppings out definitely does help the cosmetics side of things .

Have you thought about coming up to Chad's PA GTG this August? I'd love to meet you.

Thanks! Yup, I feel sorta like I am running a rescue shelter for wayward w124's. Chads, PA in August? Dunno. We're going to a Bluegrass festival in August (Pickin in Parsons, in Parsons, WV). What is the date?

He was thinking August 23rd. Here's the thread.

Oh, and you may want to set traps out. I trapped three mice in my old 300D even though I thought they were all gone.

Yup - already on that. I had to do the same for my other wagon, Klaus. It sat for months while I replaced the head - got a few mice then too. We're going to have to really shampoo the insides to get the mouse stench out.

Our cat, curiously, isn't interested in mice. He perfers voles. Eats them up like candy.

UPDATE - Well, it's not good news for Spouse. Spent this weekend putting it all back together - after much bleeding of air (from the IP and injectors) - it finally started again - runs like doo-doo, just like before. New IP, newly rebuilt injectors, fresh fuel. Billowing clouds of fuel laden smoke, engine won't hold an idle and always wants to die.

The PO said it had one cylinder with really low compression, I'm thinking new rings.

Going to start disconnecting everything and get ready to pull the engine out for a rebuild. It will be allot easier with the engine on a stand. I'll trailer it to Quantico and use their lift.

More photos to come !

Could have stuck rings from sitting. Can you drive it? Driving it and letting the motor run for a while could free them up. Worth a try before investing in pulling the motor and tearing it down.

I would first perform a compression test.

You have spent a lot on the fuel system in this car, let's diagnose it properly!
