617 won't start after valve adjustment.

Finished a head rempalcement. Started the car up before adjusting the valves and it was running strong. After the adjustment it won't even start. To full battery charges later and bleeding the system for a hour no luck. It's like the fuel won't combust.

Check the adjustment. All the intakes should be set at a .10 mm gap, and all the exhausts should be set at .35 mm. Also, the lobes should be pointing at the oil feed tube; IOW, if you consider the lobes "eggs", the tips of the eggs should be pointing at the tube that runs above and to the driver's side of the cam.

Congrats on the head job!

You apparently have adjusted them so tight it lacks sufficient compression to fire.

As Joseppi suggested above you will need to recheck them and give proper clearance. You should be able to feel the compression when cranking over.

If it does not have any compression it should turn over very quickly. The leaking should be able to be heard in the intake and or exhaust but with full mufflers on it probably will not be very loud in the exhaust side.

Just to confirm: you turned the motor clockwise during the procedure?

Did you make a chart like the attached one, to ensure you were adjusting intake and exhaust valves in the correct order?

Clockwise, as viewed standing at the front of the car and looking toward the back.

(To help clarify what I have seen other people confused about)

Maybe there is no fuel. Any chance you did not get the accelerator linkages reconnected correctly? Stop lever engaged, perhaps?

I bought a compression tester. The motor is still a bear to turn over by hand. The only other thing I did was install the chain guide next to the idler gear. Could it be rubbing the chain and preventing it from being able to turn fast enough to start? Do I need that guide?

People answered with specific points/suggestions/questions. It would be useful if you could respond to these before you launch off in a new direction.

Did you do any other work prior to the valve adjustment? Besides the chain guide?

Did you pull the injectors when you did the valves?

Yes I turned the motor over clockwise. I used the .10mm and .35mm gauges. I'm pretty Sure the fuel is getting to the injectors.

Agreed.

on a cold engine, valve lash makes no difference. It does not affect startup (as long as the valve is not staying open).

as long as there is some clearance between the cam surface and the rockers, the valve lash is not the problem. Valve lash is for proper closure function of the valves once the valves get warm.

...that doesn't mean you should not check it.

Were you able to get the engine started more than once? Did you drive the car?

Check all your vacuum lines and fuel supply- did you bleed the injector lines?

Make sure you indexed the injection pump properly to the camshaft.

And you are certain you correctly ID's the exhaust and intake valves?

I mixed them up once... and it was the third time I did this procedure. It only takes a bad day. My car did start, but ran really bad.

Have you actually verified fuel is getting up the hard lines?

Also, make sure that you are reading the feeler gauge correctly. Crack some injector lines and make sure you have fuel.

Confirm you measured the valves in the correct location aka the arrow

Well the values were pointing straight up when I did the ajustment. We got the car to start 3 times before we did the valve ajustment no problem. The linkage wasn't on when I tried to start it. I've not coneted the vacuum yet either.
