Please excuse my ignorance then. And my misinformation. It does appear that part is original equipment for W123 with ACCII.
However, it must be '79 and up. My '78 and two other '78s I have seen in my time did not have that. See picture. Looks like that epc is showing that valve or part 278. Mine definitely has 278 and for Sure no kind of vacuum control for such a valve. Also, I can say with absolute certainty that, when I got my car and the servo was inop it was definitely defaulted to defrost only mode. Defrost on full blast hot or off only. Must be another case of one of those design evolution kind of things. Interesting to me to try to decipher what and why the change in design from one year to the next. What do y'all think?

As has been pointed out, the large diameter version is the same as the 201 heater valve. And here's a surprise for you...it's the same as a Porsche 928/944 heater valve. Apparently, a third party component that's found it's way into various German cars.

Thanks for the responses everyone....sorry that I didn't follow up until now (busy weekend). Mystery solved: the part that I received was in fact the correct part for a '79 300D. However, what is actually in my '79 300D is a modification that a mechanic made under the prior owner when they installed a new engine. The heating system is a hybrid from about a '76 450SL....supposedly the modification is desirable for reliability reasons (said my mechanic).
Anyway, the correct part is on order..... I did discover that I can by-pass the vacuum valve temporarily while I wait for the part. The only consequence appears to be heat always-on. Not a big deal. Thanks -harv |
