W123 How Full is Full

How full should I fill up the fuel tank? I have spent 14 years filling my VW Beetle TDI up to the brim. Then the drive home would use enough fuel that expansion would not cause a problem. How full can I safely go with my 77 300D?

I just put the nozzle in and put it on automatic. When it clicks I hang it up. No stuffing the tank for me. I spill enough in this simple manner.

I fill to click, push down on the back bumper a couple times, and fill until I can see the fuel. Don't smell anything and gets me more time for University. Getting around 25m.p.g. so don't think I am leaking anything?

As much as I can get in there without it spilling. I usually fill up at a place 19 miles from my house, so the filler neck is empty by the time I get home.

This is the way I've been filling up but got worried as this is a new-to-me car. Just trying to make sure I don't screw something up!

Thanks for all replies guys!

Now I have stuffed some more in there by having the car on a slight grade with the filler on the uphill side.

That is if you trust your fuel cap gasket. I've changed mine recently with a fresh viton gasket. Maybe consider freshing yours.

Nothing worse than seeing an mb with a fuel slick trailing down the rear quarter. Also, the drain inside the fuel door cavity drains into the trunk. Avoid spilling fuel in there and keep that out of the trunk.

Great idea about the gasket. Did you find a pre-made viton gasket or did you make one? If pre-made, where?

Thanks.

Pre made from that place way out in the Pacific Northwest.

It's probably a MB part. Don't know the part number tho.

I always let the foam fade away, then fill to the brim. Makes my mileage calculations consistent.

It helps if you fill the car with the fuel filler side of the car higher than the other side. Then rock the car a bit once the pump clicks off.

Maybe yours drains into the trunk because the drain tube is bad. It is supposed to drain out just behind the rear wheel down low OUTSIDE THE CAR.

Before buying a new gasket, pop your old one off and flip it around....it usually does the trick!

You can also use the same one that is on the oil/oel fill cap.

When do I have money to fill my tank full
