Thinking of selling my 240D

I really hate to do this, but it may be time to sell my '83 240D. I've owned it since new and have probably over maintained it. I have detailed maintenance records of everything ever done to the car down to details of every tank of fuel it's ever gotten and the mpg of every fill up. It's in great shape - virtually no rust. It just pretty much sits in my garage now taking up a space - BTW it's been garage kept all it's life. I'm lucky to put 500 miles a year on it anymore. It has become my Home Depot car and my recycling car. That's the way it's been for nearly ten years. Rarely do I put more than one tank of fuel in it each year. My E300D is my daily driver now. The 240D is a four speed manual. Interior also in great shape.

I'm not sure it's worth to you what's it's worth to me, but I'm asking $7500 for it. If I don't get that, I'm okay with that. I really don't want to get rid of it, but common sense says that I probably should.

I have an oil/filter change, coolant service and a brake fluid flush due this month. Coolant gets done every three years (GO5) and brake fluid every two years even with the little use that it gets. That's an example of how anal I am about maintenance.

For more info, questions or photos contact me at len@sokoloff.com.

Car is located in NC between Wilmington and Myrtle Beach.

Car is white with navy blue MB tex interior.

Just a comment. I have seen Len's 240D and it looks great! Definitely worth considering if you want a 240D. (it looks like a twin of my 300D pictured below)

Thanks Graham - your check is in the mail.

I've had some requests for photos, so here they come.

I don't "know" Len personally, but I know of him... if memory serves, going all the way back to the "Original Internet Mercedes Mailing List" run by David Lefebvre back in the mid-1990s.

From what I know about Len... I can guarantee his car will be nice. Likely you will NOT find another car in the same condition for quite a while.

Thanks for the nice comments - looks like I've got to send another check to Canada.

Yep, I've been around a long time on these forums. The 240D was my only Mercedes when I stumbled across Dave Lefebvre's list back in the mid-90's.

Looks like a nice 240D. The only issues with it is that it's pretty well wore out. A mercedes benz shop owner told me sometime back, that the life of them is about 300.3 k miles. The motors just don't last much longer than that he told me. I would venture to say it is actually worth about 2 to 2.5 k in value. It is worth more than that to you, and you will probably want to just keep the car. Plus you can snag a pretty nice car under 100 k for 7.5 k. Milage does make a difference with the majority of people even, if the car is 31 years old. This is only my opinion, and I have only been around mercedes for the last 14 years, as such!

meh, i wouldnt put that shop owners artificial cutoff on mileage above the collective experience of all the high mileage cars on here personally. my 83 240 is past 370k, runs like a top. mileage is irrelevant compared to maintenance. the wifes 300TD is at 340k, and is better running than most of the 617s ive owned. i bought it off a guy who really cared for it.

however, i agree on the price. there is really a limit to how much you can really ask for a car past the 300k mark, no matter how nice or well maintained, its still had a lot of use.

Yep, I agree with both of you guys. Maybe I really don't want to sell it.

Common sense says you should? Sorry but I don't follow the logic. I fail to see how common sense says you should dump an excellent example of the finest car ever made.

Learned that one the hard way with mine and I'm regretting it every day and still trying to recover from the consequences. Your price may be a tad high but then again, if I had the money I might will be willing to pay it myself.

The idea that a 240D motor is wore out after 300K is nonsense.
