220D fuel lines

If you are starting with no fuel lines on a 1969 220D how do you know which hard line coming into the engine bay is the supply and which is the return? I just removed someone's failed attempt at a grease car conversion and redid the fuel lines. I think I got the supply and return right, but after 45min at 60mph or so she started to lose power BAD. After it sat 5-10 minutes she was better.I think it is the fuel screen in the tank, but have a full tank so it will be a while before I can pull it out. But if I did hook up the supply and return backwards could that be the problem?

Start with where the Line comes out of the Fuel Tank and trace the Line forward.

On My Year and Model the Fuel Retruns to the Tank from a higher positon in the Fuel Tank. In order to get Fuel from the Higher Position in the Fuel Tank the Fuel level has to be high enough for that.

If the Fuel Lines all the way from the Tank foward were dry when you started out it takes an awful amount of pumping on the Hand Primer to get it up front. Raising the Rear of the Car can be helpful.

If your hand Primer is leaking You are going to get even more Exercise even if it manages to move some Fuel.

Leave the Nuts of the Fuel injection Hard Lines at the Injectors loose so Air can easily escape during Engine Cranking so the bleed the Air out fast without killing the Battery and or the Starter.

The Glow Plugs also need to function.

If you really want to know if the Engine is going to start get some Fuel Inlet Hose long enough to go into one of those 2 Gallon Spare Fuel Tanks (like People use when they run out of Fuel) or some other Container with clean Diesl Fuel in it and see if you can get the Car to start with that. You should be able to prime the System Faster as the Fuel does not have to move as Far.
Once you find the Engine can run after you connect it up to the Tank you will know it is not starting because Fuel From the Fuel Tank is not getting up to the front yet.
