OM602 NA, oil in expansion tank

New to me OM602 in 190D 2.5 NA. Runs OK, a little rough at idle. Noticed crank oil in expansion tank. Floated it out, seems to have added an 1/2 ounce or so though the day. Watching the dipstick now.

Is a compression test needed or just a head gasket and set of bolts?

If it is Engine Oil it could be the Head Gasket (cracked?). If the Oil Cooler is cooled by the coolant it could be the Oil Cooler.

Oil from the Tranmission Cooler?

Does it have the other head gasket relates symptoms like Radiator Hoses that remain Hard and inflated after the Engine has cooled off?

When I had the same problem the cause was the head gasket. Failed at the forward oil passage. Head bolts can be reused if not stretched too much. Recommend Elring or Mercedes head gasket.

OK, thanks NJ. Is it a bad job? A parts car came w/ the deal, I can swap motor or head, depending. I've had cams & such off my 616's, but haven't gone 3" lower yet. Looks like a set of bolts is only $50. The one that fails will be an expensive $2 saved, won't it.

It's a chore, but not too complicated. A few tips:

1) Figure out what else you might want to do with the engine apart: rebuild the cylinder head, replace the chain, injectors, glow plugs, chain tensioner, etc. It's hard to know where to stop, so set out with a plan.

2) Use zip ties to tie the cam gear and chain together, makes it easier to reassemble if everything is in time.

3) The engine turns clockwise when viewed from the front. Never turn it backwards.

4) To get the head bolts off without drama, first make sure they are super clean...spray out the heads with brake cleaner. Use the correct XZN socket. Position the socket on the bolt, and then....give it a sharp whack with a hammer. The shock will loosen any rust and gunk, and make it easier to remove the bolt.

5) Anything you drop into the timing case will require you to pull the pan. Keep some rags stuffed into the opening while you're working to avoid much more work than you anticipated.

190D's have air-cooled oil coolers. I don't think that any Mercedes has a water-cooled oil cooler, that's a Porsche affliction.

Item #206 in the Pic is the Oil Cooler. It apparenly Bolts to the Oil Filter Housing and the short Hoses or Connectors go to the Engine Coolant System.

I don't know enough about 190Ds to know if there might be some version that has an Coolant to Oil Oil Cooler or not so I mentioned it as one of the causes of Oil in the Coolant just in case.

That's some good rubadub in the first video.
