W126 lower ball joint installation tool

This is a feeler: Has anyone bought or used the aftermarket installation tool that can be bought for @ $100?
Please refrain from telling me that the auto zone tool will work.
Thanks.

There is no reason for that tool not to work, provided that the necessary press is available.

Zacharias 05-28-2014 03:33 PM

Yes

There is a thread, on the other board I believe, where someone used it.

You are able to leave the boot on the balljoint for the install, which is a huge advantage over some DIY cludges people have successfully done with the generic C-press.

As Tango notes, however, you need to find someone with a floor-model shop press to actually press it in, or take it to a garage or machine shop. Check out local prices first, the one shop I have found so far, which will do it for me with me bringing in the tool, wanted $100. Not going to happen.

BTW, I am fairly certain one or both varieties of the tool (clamp/press, tube) are available for rental from members here, on the tool rental subforum.

Yes I've got access to a pneumatic press so that's not a problem. I had found 1 person to rent from but figured if I ever have another one to do I'd have the tool.
Thanks for the info.

That particular Tool is made for use with a Hydraulic Press.

As previously stated there is a really good writ up on that JTC Tool
Don't remember which of the below it is in. Do a Post Search for JTC and see if that narrows it down.

Freeze your all joint before installing it. Makes the ball joint slide in like butter.

Well you know; I had planned on using liquid nitrogen and doing just that.
Thanks for the info. Tool has been ordered.

I just had a local shop press them in for about $40, they did not need the tool and did a good job...

vstech 05-29-2014 12:23 AM

I just bought the tool to add to my abilities. I'll let you all know what I think of it.

I have a LOT of spindles to rebuild...

Did you watch how it was done? I am assuming so as you say they did a good job.

Please let us in on the secret.

I have this tool. Got a 20 ton press from harbor freight also.
Posted pics on BW. The tool comes with a large punch to remove
The joints also. Works great BTW. 84 300SD
