Another possible cause would be a bad ground connection or connections. There have recently been several discussions about bad grounds in various circuits around our cars.

That scenario is possible, but the ground system has many connection points. Some of these involve wires, and others involve the so called PC boards of the instrument panel. Any or all of the connections can be bad with varying results.

Fixed - what I thought were two good bulbs turned out to be 2 bad bulbs. Oh well.

Since all the connections (except the clock and tach) go into the left pod, you can just plug the pod back into the car connector to test it without the rest of the cluster present.

Goes without saying, don't crank the car with the oil line disconnected

I think you have a bad replacement gauge. I would try jumping out the rheostat. Get a set of alligator clip leads from Radio Shack, I would run 2 in parallel since there are a lot of bulbs on a 123 that run through there.

I have a spare 123 F-O-T gauge available. It is from a pre-1981 123 since the units are American (psi and deg F). But it is electrically the same. PM me if you are interested. If you are really adventurous you can remove the needles and swap the faces if you want to retain the stock look. One other thing that won't be there is the startup bulb self test for the low fuel indicator, that was added on the post 81 units.
