Looks like a nice bamboo interior. I have never seen the bundt style hub caps before. Was that a factory option or something aftermarket?

Bamboo you say..sweet. It's in good shape. I'm having a hard time removing the rear seat back out of fear of destroying it. I suspect they might be aftermarket. Kicking myself for not buying hubcaps at the junkyard when I had found them. |

All the cardboard strips and cloth portions of the seat cover will be rotted away, don't be afraid to yank on it....there are three bolts one on each side and one under the arm rest.....pull it towards the front seat and then lift it off the hangers... Might be best to go to the JY and pull another seat back for the springs and look around for one with green horse hair of foam....I have foam pads all around in both my cars....never want to pass them up at a JY..

I might have missed the middle bolt. Last time I found a w123 in the yards was a year ago and it was crappy
Wish I had money back when the yards were crawling with w123's. I'll probably replace the horsehair with foam from Joanne's. |

I decided to adjust the valves today and attempt to start the car and see how well she would run.
The engine is a bit dirty from sitting for a long time and I plan on cleaning it up. I forgot to take photos of the progress but I installed a new valve cover gasket since the old one was very crumbly. Turning the engine over by hand was a bit hard, my friend(Pierre Hedary) said the cylinders probably have a little bit of surface rust in them so I should pull the glow plugs and dribble in some marvel mystery oil and turn it over by hand to coat the cylinder walls and lube the rings. We tossed in a battery and let the glow plugs warm up and cranked.... and cranked.. and cranked and got nothing. I suspect the 20 year old fuel might be an issue so I plan on getting a small can of diesel and running supply and return to it to test it that way. No weird sounds came from the engine while cranking. We also pulled all of the linkages off and lubricated all of the joints, they were incredibly stiff and not cooperating. Hopefully this week I can get her started and see how healthy the engine is. The title should be arriving this week so I can get a VIN cut key and open the trunk. Fingers crossed it has a trunk triangle. My last 240D had one and that was an '82 model year. imgur.com album of the 240D saga |

In order to get my 78 started, after it sitting for so long and extremely tight valves, I had to hook up my euro via thick cables to the 78 and while cranking have my friend reeve up the euro and finally it popped off...the idea was to not stop cranking...eventually it got up enough compression to pop....I believe the manual says you can crank the starter for up to 60secs....
I am road tripping to michigan next month, anyone want to throw some fuel monies in, we can go up to vstech's place
