96 e300d inside blower fan

Hi Guys The blower fan stopped working all of a sudden . It was working fine up until than. How do i check it ? Thanks Greg

Could be either the blower or the controller. Has either been replaced previously? If original, both must be replaced if either is bad.

inside blower out

Thanks for your reply I replaced blower motor regulator a yr ago. How can i check if the fan is out or the regulator, controller or fuse is out? Thanks Greg

"All of the sudden" would not usually be warn brushes as I describe below. Check fuses first.
Check your connections on the regulator that you replaced a year ago.

Take the fan out of the car and bench test it. If it does not run, check the brushes. If they are worn out:
You can spend $389 on a new blower motor
or
$8 on a pair of brushes.

At 320k my brushes were worn down. ( at 180k I did the W140 regulator swap )

I took the stubs of the old ones to the hardware store and we found a pair that were close in size.
I sanded them down to size by putting a piece of 80 grit sandpaper on a flat surface and rubbing the brush on it. Check the size often. The soft carbon brush sands down quickly.
I soldered the leads from the new brushes to the leads from the old brushes that remained in the motor from when I had cut them from the old brushes to remove them.

I think that I had to bend the end of the brush carrier open to remove them.
I do not think that they were designed to easily be replaced.
I cannot remember if I used the springs from the old brushes or the springs that came with the new ones. It should be obvious which one to use.

You will now have an electrical smell in the car for a little while until the brush wares in.

no blower in car

Hi Guys Where is the fuse for the fan ?

Ive looked cant seem to find it. I know of 3 fuse locations under back seat ,inside car drivers side, under hood drivers side near brake booster is there any more? Thanks Greg

If it's not the fuse, it's almost certainly the blower controller. The controllers are frequent failure points for this car. Here's a pretty good write up on replacing it:

It doesn't take long to find a blown fuse. You should have been able to check them all by now.
